IBM has recently released a variety of new products and services focused on "security, cloud computing and analytics", adding fresh impetus to its wisdom calculations. The first showcase includes power 770 and 780 servers, POWERVM virtualization software, POWERSC Security and compliance software, and new mainframe software products with IBM's newest power7+ microprocessors.

On the storage side, IBM has released new systems and software designed to address the challenges of large data storage performance and, in some cases, to follow the popular OpenStack cloud platform.

IBM has launched a new system Storage DS8870 array, according to Ed Walsh, vice president of IBM System Storage Marketing and strategy: "This product is three times times faster than the previous model." IBM claims to provide 3 times times more performance than ds8800,ds8870 in transactional applications.

This improvement is partly due to the fact that IBM's controller now comes with a Power7 processor and a maximum 1TB cache. In the test, the system beats opponents with 451082 IOPS (full hard drive) SPC-1 test results and 15424 MB/s SPC-2 speed.

Walsh says DS8870 is also "flash-optimized", and customers don't have to invest a lot of money in solid-state discs to gain system performance and responsiveness. By adding a flash storage capacity of "just 2%" relative to the hard disk space, customers can achieve up to "300% performance improvement".

Walsh also hinted at IBM's efforts to advance its solid-state storage technology. Strategic initiatives, such as the recently acquired Texas Memory, have also added to the company's enterprise-class flash strategy.

For security enhancement, DS8870 comes with a fully encrypted drive as standard. The system also helps keep power requirements in the data center under monitoring. According to the IBM report, DS8870 is 20% more energy efficient than its predecessor.

The IBM mainframe Virtual tape library has received some attention in the form of security improvements in the 3rd edition of Virtualization Engine TS7700. To protect sensitive data, such as customer records, the system supports "rest and work data is encrypted" through hardware-encrypted disk drives (in TS7720 and TS7740 models), encrypted tape systems (TS7740), and secure connections to TS7700 systems.

TS7700 can also process more data. This update provides support for up to 4 million virtual tape cartridges, twice times the number of previous versions, and increased physical storage capacity of up to 40% on TS7720.

IBM Research Center will support more products for OpenStack projects (i.e. Nova volume and cinder Drive). Because of the OpenStack Nova volume drive, the XIV Storage system third-generation enterprise arrays and Storwize V7000 Unified Storage System updates are more "cloud friendly".
