Beijing time June 25, according to foreign media reports, at a seminar held in Sidney, Australia, this week, the Internet name and number distribution Agency (ICANN) said that if it went well, it would add hundreds of generic top-level domain names (GTLD) to the global Internet industry in 2010, To meet the growing demand for domain names in non-English speaking countries and regions around the world.
After increasing the number of generic top-level domains, ICANN said, the global Internet industry will have broader business areas such as sports (. Sport), food (. Food) and New York City (. nyc) and so on. Not only that, this is also conducive to accelerating the non-English-speaking countries in the Internet industry technology innovation, so that users have more choices. It is learnt that the newly added generic top-level domain will support Chinese, Arabic and other non-English languages.
But some large U.S. corporate users say ICANN should not rush to increase the number of top-level domain names, and that if the number of top-level domain names is too high in the short term, it will not be conducive to brand companies protecting their trademarks, and may lead to a dramatic increase in cyber-crime such as phishing attacks.
Other opponents of ICANN's huge increase in the world's top-level domain names argue that ICANN's move is not aimed at expanding the global Internet industry, but is hoping to get more Internet domain name registration fees. These people believe that, compared with the previous domain name registration fees, the new top-level domain name corresponding charges are obviously too high.
Still, the groups and institutions that support ICANN's increase in the number of top-level domain names say that if ICANN's plan can be implemented smoothly, it will help to refine the services of the Internet industry. For example, in the future, the domain names for the major cities (such as Paris, "Africa"), regional domain names (such as Africa's "."), Environmental industry domain name (. Green) and wine industry domain name (. wine) and so on will be increased.
Since 2007, ICANN has been discussing how to increase the number of top-level domain names around the world, and has developed a preliminary plan for outside reference. Its final guiding principles will be announced in October this year.
