Paul Wami Paul Twomey, CEO of the Internet domain name and Address management Agency (hereinafter referred to as "ICANN"), said in Monday that he would leave after ICANN appointed a successor, according to foreign media reports in the early hours of March 3.
In a statement released today, Wami said he had refused to renew the three-year contract with ICANN last year, but did not specify the reason for his departure, saying only that he wanted to "transfer to a leadership position in a private or international company".
Wami said he would remain in office to designate a successor to ICANN and continue to stay for some time thereafter to successfully complete the handover. Wami has been CEO of ICANN since 2003 and his contract with the agency expires on July 1.
In 1998, the U.S. government selected ICANN as the regulatory authority for domain name policy.
ICANN plans to formally announce Wami's resignation later in Monday. This week, ICANN will hold a regular meeting in Mexico City.
The year before Wami decided to leave office, "father of the Internet" Winton Sove (Vint Cerf) resigned as ICANN's chairman. "I think Wami is more influential than anyone in the development of ICANN," Cerf said in a statement today. ”
