San Francisco November 2 interview: non-Latin domain name will promote Internet development-visit ICANN expert Tina Dam.
Internet name and number distribution company (ICANN) has decided that it will begin to allow the use of non-Latin alphabet text to register the top domain name. ICANN company's domain name registration director Tina DAM 2nd in an interview with Xinhua news agency, said the decision is expected to play a positive role in the future development of the Internet.
According to a proposal adopted by the ICANN Corporate Council, starting from November 16, the use of non-Latin text in a limited number of country or region top-level domain names will be allowed first. This means you can use Chinese in the future. China "instead of". CN ". Dam said the next step may be to promote the ". com" and other generic top-level domain names of non-Latin.
In recent years, although some countries have introduced domain names that contain non-Latin letters, the global root domain system, managed by ICANN, has been used only in Latin, with the result that some of the domain names that use the non-Latin alphabet are limited to countries that use the domain name and are inaccessible to users in other regions. ICANN's new decision will open the door to truly internationalizing non-Latin domain names.
Dam pointed out that the new decision means "in the future in the world will be able to normal access to all Chinese domain names in China." For many Chinese users, the whole Chinese domain name is a big advantage than the use of the Latin alphabet is more easily remembered. People in the newspaper or somewhere else occasionally see a full Chinese domain name, not too much brain to leave the impression, and in the Internet to easily enter the relevant web site. Chinese domain name not only helps to promote the exchange of information, but also for foreign enterprises, such as more targeted to expand the Chinese market to bring convenience.
But there is also a small number of public opinion in the United States that ICANN approved some "we simply can not enter the domain name on the computer", which will weaken the English "dominant" position on the Internet, resulting in the internet world because of language difficult to communicate and further split.
According to dam, the introduction of non-Latin domain names on a global scale would not only lead to internet fragmentation, but would help connect people through the Internet. Some companies have tried to create their own domain name root servers to get rid of ICANN's impact. Dam further explained that, if not in the global promotion of non-Latin domain names, other than Latin language services alternative domain name root server system may be more and more, they can not communicate with each other, this is the division of the Internet.
She pointed out that the content of the Internet was already multilingual, but for a long time, these content and "address" in language does not match. The opening of non-Latin domain names will break this hurdle, and what new business and new tools may be spawned is now difficult to conceive.
The company has always attached great importance to the potential network security risks posed by non-Latin domain names, says dam. She said the company would be extremely cautious about approving which non-Latin top-level domain names to ensure that there is no similarity to existing top-level domain names and confusing users.
