IDC: Asia Pacific manufacturers are not in a hurry to turn to cloud computing

However, only 16% per cent of respondents recognised these factors as the main driving force behind the widespread use of cloud computing (see chart 1). This shows that manufacturers at this stage of the cloud technology attitude is most tepid. Research results further show that half of the participants hesitate to adopt a cloud-based solution because they are concerned about the speed of the last kilometer connection. But most of the respondents admitted that their concerns about the speed of connection were temporary, as telecommunications network infrastructure was booming in much of Asia.

"Keeping costs down is still the focus of manufacturers in the Asia-Pacific region," said Dr William Lee, Insights Asia Pacific Senior research manager at IDC Manufacturing. Because most of the benefits of cloud computing do not translate directly into lower total costs than traditional field it deployments, their application is still very slow. At this stage, less than 10% of manufacturing companies across the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) adopt cloud technology. That said, we still see a glimmer of light. In the current volatile manufacturing market, corporate interest in cloud computing has rekindled, as more companies pursue short-term return on investment (ROI), one of the main benefits of cloud computing. ”

Not surprisingly, security remains the biggest obstacle to cloud applications for manufacturers in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan. However, for security concerns, manufacturers in the region are worried not just about the data leaks of sensitive information, but also about the time and resources spent on data recovery.

"People tend to think that cloud storage is less secure than internal data storage," Dr. Lee said. However, a recent security study published by IDC shows that most of the security vulnerabilities in reality are actually from within. Therefore, using the cloud to store data does not necessarily make the data more vulnerable to security threats. ”
