In the first quarter of 2013, tablet shipments surged, up 142% per cent year-on-year, according to the report. Just a few weeks ago, IDC had just released a report on the shrinking PC industry. At the time, IDC data showed PC shipments fell 14% per cent year-on-year in the first quarter, as more users opted to buy tablets. The IDC report also shows that Google's Android operating system supports more tablet shipments than Apple's iOS-backed ipad in the first quarter of this year. In fact, Android's share of the tablet market has overtaken iOS since the third quarter of 2012, a spokesman for IDC said. In the first quarter of this year, Android tablet shipments reached 27.8 million units (56.5% of the market), compared to 19.5 million of the iOS tablet (39.6% of the market share) and Windows and Windows RT Tablet PC shipments are 1.6 million units and 200,000 units (the market share of 3.3% and 0.4% respectively), the other operating system Tablet PC shipments of 100,000 units (the market share of 0.2%). In fact, similar to the tablet market, Android is also gaining market share over iOS in the smartphone world. For now, Apple is still one of the top tablet makers, but on the whole, Android-backed tablets have overtaken iOS, largely because many Android tablet makers are seeing open source code for the system. However, although Amazon has massively modified the software in the Kindle Fire and canceled support for Google's App Store and other services, IDC still looks at the tablet as an Android tablet computer. In the first quarter of this year, Apple was still the largest vendor of tablet computers, with sales accounting for nearly 40% of the market, mainly because of smaller, cheaper ipad Mini, according to IDC data. In the first quarter of this year, Samsung accounted for 18% of the market for Tablet PC sales, followed by Asus and Amazon. Data show that in the first quarter of this year, Apple, Samsung, Asus, Amazon and Microsoft tablet computer shipments were 19.5 million units, 8.8 million, 2.7 million, 1.8 million and 900,000 units. Notably, in the first quarter of this year, Microsoft shipped about 900,000 Surface tablets, including the Surface Pro tablet computer, which was launched in February this year. 2013 first quarter Android Tablet PC shipments share has been over iOS (Tencent technology map) 2013 firstQuarterly manufacturers of Tablet PCs shipments and market share (Tencent technology map)
