IDC: Global PC Shipments Fall 1.7% in the third quarter

Global PC shipments fell 1.7% per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of this year, according to a new report released in Wednesday by IDC, the US market research firm, in the morning of October 9, Beijing time. Although this is the index of the 10th consecutive quarterly decline, but better than IDC 4.1% of the year-on-year contraction forecast. Meanwhile, Gartner, another US market research firm, showed that global PC shipments fell 0.5% per cent year-on-year in the third quarter. The 1.7% per cent drop in IDC was equal to the second quarter, the lowest drop since the PC market began shrinking in early 2012. At that time, the netbook market had collapsed because of competition from the tablet computer. Shipments to the U.S. and European markets have increased as corporate users buy PCs in bulk, helping Lenovo, HP (35.92,0.70,1.99%) and Dell, the top three PC makers, achieve share growth. Yet Asia, the world's largest PC market, has shrunk further because of other areas of weakness. (PEI)
