IDC and EMC have just released a report titled "Http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/33722.html, the >2020 digital universe," which predicts big data developments from now eight years. Some interesting highlights are listed below.
By 2020, the digital universe will swell to 40000EB, or 40 trillion GB (that is, every man, woman, and child in 2020 can be halved to more than 5200GB). From now until 2020, the expansion rate of this digital universe is about doubling every two years.
By 2020, nearly 40% of the information in the digital universe could be "touched" by cloud providers-that is, a byte could be stored or processed somewhere in the cloud on the way from the source to the destination. Perhaps 15% of the information will always reside in the cloud.
In the digital universe, the proportion of data that needs to be protected is faster than the expansion rate of the digital universe itself, which will grow from less than One-third in 2010 to 40% in 2020.
Today, only about half of the information that needs to be protected is protected. By 2020 this situation may improve slightly, and some information that requires higher security will grow faster than the digital universe itself, but it still means that the amount of unprotected data will grow at 26%.
By 2020, about one-third of the data in the digital universe (over 13000EB) would be of great data value, but only if it was tagged and analyzed. In the 2012, we thought that 23% of the data in the digital universe (or 643EB) would be useful for large data if they were tagged and analyzed. However, technology always goes beyond demand, in fact, only about 3% of the data that we think might be useful is tagged and less data is being analyzed. (Wave Compilation)
