Installing and configuring my Ubuntu 8.04: Restoring grub and backup systems

At the command line, type:

DD If=/dev/hda of=/media/hda5/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 (back up MBR records to D disk, preferably copy to a USB drive or floppy disk for storage).

Then copy the Bootsect.lnx file to the C-packing directory, edit the Boot.ini file, and add a line at the end:

c:\bootsect.lnx= "Ubuntu".

The easiest way I'm using

1, copy a GRLDR to C disk

2, add C:\grldr=ubuntu in boot.ini

3, the original Ubuntu menu.lst also copied over. You can use the live CD to get it out, or back up one in advance.

Overall recovery

Tar Xvpfz backup.tgz-c/

Mkdir/proc/lost+found/mnt/sys/media

If you use bz2:
Tar xvpfj backup.tar.bz2-c/
Warning: This will replace all files in your partition with files in a compressed document!
Be sure to recreate the directory you removed before you do anything else:

mkdir proc
mkdir Lost+found
mkdir MNT
mkdir SYS
mkdir Media

Re-reboot ...
