Intel launches new 32 core server chip speed up to 1.2GHz

This new architecture combines the common x86 kernel with a special kernel for faster processing of highly parallel scientific and commercial applications.

"Knights Ferry" is the fastest processor Intel has released to date, said Kirk Skaugen, vice president of Intel and general manager of Data Center division, at the International Supercomputer Conference in Hamburg, Germany, in Monday. The core speed of this chip is 1.2GHz. This is the first member of the new server chipset family code-named Knights. Intel explains that the chip is based on a new "many integrated kernel" architecture.

This 32-core chip will be available for development purposes in the second half of 2010.

The original "Knights Ferry" 32 nuclear chips will be manufactured using the current 32 nm process. The chip can run four threads per kernel and includes a 8MB shared cache with up to 2GB high-speed GDDR5 memory.

Skaugen says the chips will speed up highly parallel applications. It also standardizes the software development platform around the x86 architecture, making it easier to recompile applications.
