As chipmakers seek to make a difference in the "post-Wintel era", IT companies accustomed to the Intel system may find something new. At least it seems that it has become an important development trend with cloud computing, and that is smartphones.
In the fourth quarter of 2010, smartphones shipped more than 100 million units worldwide, for the first time exceeding PCs shipments. As a result, old patterns, Intel's rut, and even powerful laptops and desktops that drive the market are not comparable to the mobile model and the cloud computing model that take shape.
But Intel has not reconciled itself to the achievements of its PC era. At this week's Intel Developer Forum, the company's CEO, Paul Otellini, introduced a hub device that all other devices communicate with. He said the device would play a central role in protecting and authorizing other devices, namely tablets and smartphones.
Even in areas where Intel has struggled to gain a foothold, such as smartphones, companies claim that it will benefit from the sector's overall growth. According to Intel's estimates, 660 smartphones per shipment need to deploy a new server to support the facility. Similarly, a new server needs to be deployed for every 110 tablets sold on the market.
"It's a device-leading story," said Matthew Eastwood, an analyst at IDC, based in Framingham, Massachusetts. "Users can use any device to access any resource they need at any location, and this is not a single device or platform to solve the problem." ”
Meanwhile, cloud computing is a "huge infrastructure" for Intel, says Stephen Pawlowski, senior researcher at Intel and the company's data center group CTO.
In the Intel Cloud Computing Technology Vision Series, he cites several trends related to cloud computing that drive Intel's growth. According to IDC, the storage capacity to support all data migration to the cloud from 2009 to 2014 will grow by 670%.
The rapid development of video flow and sensor technology (such as GPS, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, etc.) requires the support of powerful processing ability. While large data analysis is a trend, Intel will focus on driving the business.
"Future computing will be dominated by the evolving real-time data integration and analysis," Pawlowski said.
Intel also intends to influence the way future cloud computing systems work more directly. Pawlowski says the chipmaker is already working to integrate algorithms into the chip, which helps to match the workload with the right machine, a concept called processor affinity. He said he was able to imagine a system-level program management program that knew about the instruction set. "For example, this memory belongs to this program, so you should make sure that the data is physically as close as possible to the processor running the program." "Pawlowski said.
This capability will allow users to turn off inactive processors to conserve energy and bypass faulty processors, says Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategist at Red Hat. "Achieving higher levels of intelligence at the system level is a good thing," Haff said.
As for the creation of a program management program, Pawlowski said he could not comment at the moment.
He says Intel has explored how cloud applications can develop new NVM technologies, such as restive Memory, to overcome memory-scaling problems: "Not all the work is done on the CPU." He says there is still a lot of potential to be saved in saving data in memory.
Automation tools for resource scheduling, task scheduling, usage metrics and quality testing, automation tools for software upgrades, and the ability to check the correctness of running code will be "extremely important" for cloud computing success, Pawlowski said.
