Introduction to Joseph Yam

Mr Yam joined the Hong Kong civil service in 1971 to serve as a statisticians.　　Thereafter, Mr Ren was transferred to the Chief Secretary for Economic services to assist the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong in his work on the budget and economic analysis. He was appointed as Principal Assistant Secretary for Financial services of the Financial Services Branch in 1982 and has been actively involved in monetary and financial affairs in Hong Kong since this time.　　Hong Kong has been implementing the linked exchange rate system since 1983 and Mr Ren has also been involved in the preparatory work. Mr Ren was appointed Deputy secretary for Financial services in 1985 and became the director of the Exchange Fund authority in 1991. Since the middle of 80, the reform measures to consolidate Hong Kong's monetary system and develop Hong Kong's financial market have been carried out by Mr Ren in charge of planning.　　These measures will help promote monetary stability in Hong Kong and enhance the status of Hong Kong as an international financial centre. Mr Ren also played an important role in the establishment of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.　　The HKMA was established in 1993 and Mr Ren also left the civil service to serve as president of the HKMA. Since 1993, Mr. Ren has served as president of the HKMA. In the meantime, Mr Ren was honoured to recognize his contribution to the promotion of monetary and financial development in Hong Kong and Asia, and to lead Hong Kong through the Asian financial turmoil.
