is voice interaction a trend for future UI design?

Sam Lessin recently wrote an article called Time to Hang up on Voice, which says goodbye to voice, saying that speech cannot be a trend for future UI interactions. Speech input is faster than text input. Barbara Blackburn has the fastest typing record, with 212 words per minute, while Steve Woodmore, the fastest-talking world record, can say 637 words per minute. In other words, at the limit of human's own, speech is 3 times times faster than text. Normal ordinary people, typing speed of about 30-40 words/minute, speaking speed of about 120 words/minute, is still 3 times times the relationship. It can be seen that this ratio relationship is relatively stable.

Tomasz that because of speed, we're more used to calling people than sending emails. He tries to learn Dvorak to improve the speed of typing, but sending emails is much slower than calling. As a result, voice mail seems more appealing, more convenient, and more humane.

He also noted that the success of Siri and Google's voice search also benefited from the speed of speech. Using voice search, the daily search volume will reach an astonishing number of millions. Simply saying "Navigate to xxx" or "Check the weather in San Francisco" is much faster than typing one on a small keyboard.

As for the voice problem in public places, Tomasz that we were actually used to it. Because the telephone has been invented for more than 100 years. Sound denoising technology and social morality make it no longer difficult to solve the problem of sound fidelity and privacy.

The real challenge for speech is editing. The editing of the text is very intuitive, very easy, voice if want to revise and edit, the difficulty is much higher. If you re editing too much, it might be a good way to combine the keyboard and the mouse, at least faster than using the keyboard alone.

In fact, speech never becomes a single UI interaction. If children use voice instead of typing in school, the consequences will be unimaginable. Voice may never be a dominant UI interaction.
