C114 Beijing Time May 10 Morning News (SHANGMU) Japan SoftBank Corp. (Softbank Corp.) released its financial report for the quarter of fiscal year 2010 (C114 Note: first quarter of 2011). According to earnings reports, its net profit for the quarter was 47.41 billion yen (about 588 million US dollars), a sharp increase from 1.85 billion yen a year ago, when the low profit was mainly caused by the one-time losses from the old 2G network. This quarter's soft silver operating income of 754.74 billion yen (9.35 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of 5% per cent, while the base operating profit of 147 billion yen (1.8 billion U.S. dollars), a year-on-year increase of 48%. "The expansion of the smart-end market, driven by the iphone and the ipad, is a big factor in boosting growth." Son, Masayoshi Son, president and chief executive of SoftBank, said. SoftBank is currently the exclusive distributor of Apple Smart terminals in Japan. The ARPU value of soft silver in the fiscal quarter also rose from 4070 yen to 4210 yen, largely benefiting from smartphone usage. Its rivals have fallen ARPU in response to this trend. By the end of March 2011, SoftBank had a total of 25.4 million mobile users, an increase of 16%.
