June 5, 2012, the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Japanese Ministry of Science and Technology (MEXT) met in Tokyo, Japan, agreed that the United States and Japan in the field of disaster research will bring benefits to both sides, can use the relevant experience and professionals to reduce vulnerability in the disaster, To improve the resilience of society. The two sides agreed in principle to support a wide range of research collaborations among computer scientists, engineers, social scientists, biologists, geoscience scientists, physicists and mathematicians, and to enhance both sides ' awareness of disaster and social resilience through large data technologies.
The two sides consider that the following topics have potential for research cooperation:
(1) To make full use of the large data obtained in the disaster, through various applications (such as probabilistic disaster model) to improve the analysis, modeling and computing capabilities.
(2) Improve the flexibility and responsiveness of information technology, realize real-time data perception, visualization, analysis, testing and prediction, which is critical to timeliness decision. Promote the development and innovation of basic knowledge about resilient sustainable civil infrastructure and distributed infrastructure networks.
(3) Access to large data and promote universal access to a wide range of human, social and international knowledge on disaster preparedness and response, including human, social, economic and environmental aspects.
(4) Integrating the expertise of various disciplines, data input by end-users and large data from various sources in disaster preparedness and response.
The two sides agreed to develop a programme of action and to publish the details of the agreement by the end of 2012.
