The U.S. Labor Department said in a weekly report in Thursday that the number of first-time jobless claims in the United States declined by 11,000 in the week ended April 24, to 448,000, exactly as expected by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires.  The number of first-time jobless claims in the previous week was revised upwards to 459,000, with preliminary figures of 456,000. Although the number of first-time jobless claims has declined, the overall trend for first-time jobless claims last week is still slightly higher. The moving average around the number of jobless claims for the first time in the week ended April 17 increased. The Labor Department said the average movement as of last week was 462,500, an increase of 1,500 people compared with the previous week's revised 461,000.  But the total number of people who have continued to apply for unemployment benefits for more than a week has slipped. The Labour Department's Thursday report showed that the number of people applying for unemployment benefits declined by 18,000 in the week ended April 17, to 4,645,000. The data for the previous week were revised to 4,663,000.  As of April 17, the unemployment rate for workers with unemployment insurance was 3.6%, unchanged from the previous week, and the data for the previous week were not revised.  As of April 17, when the number of first-time jobless claims fell most in New York State and California, New York State's first jobless claims were mainly due to fewer layoffs in services and transport, while California declined in services and manufacturing. The number of first-time jobless claims in states such as Pennsylvania State, Oregon State and New Jersey has also declined. Puerto Rico first applied for jobless benefits, but the state did not provide the Ministry of Labour with an increase in the number of unemployed.
