Microsoft today announced a new desktop management tool, Windows Intune, designed to provide management and security services to Windows PCs over the front end of the network, mainly for small and medium business users. Traditional software like this requires local server support, but Windows Intune is a cloud computing service hosted by Microsoft servers, which eliminates the cost of server configuration for the enterprise.

Microsoft's desktop management tool, Windows Intune, was scheduled to expire on May 16, but Microsoft said it would no longer accept new testers just two days after announcing the start of the test project. Brandon LeBlanc, head of Microsoft's Windows Communications team, said the Windows Intune Beta was popular and received about 1000 applications from consumers and business users a day after announcing the start of the test.

"We've had an incredible response within 30 hours of the start of the Windows Intune test project, and thanks to the enthusiasm of our users, we've got enough testers," says LeBlanc. "Microsoft did not say whether it would accept additional testers or tell the official release date."

For Windows 7 and Vista systems, the Intune client has no additional hardware requirements, but if installed on XP, it requires a minimum of MHz CPU, 256MB RAM.
