According to foreign media reports, Microsoft recently announced that it will transform the MSN brand, the introduction of several Bing-driven applications and the new homepage.
Bing apps, which cover news, sports, tourism, weather, finance and other vertical content, will soon be included in the MSN brand, and Microsoft plans to launch iOS and Android versions for those apps. This is the latest action by Microsoft to "move first, Cloud first" vision (that is, allow many cloud-driven services and applications to cover each platform).
This is also an unexpected move. Microsoft has largely abandoned its MSN brand in the past few years, with its emphasis on Windows Live and Bing brands. But now, the company seems to be focused once more on the MSN brand. The revamped new MSN.com homepage recently entered preview mode, highlighting Microsoft's variety of services and popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Settings and information from Microsoft's Bing application (currently Windows 8 and Windows Phone) will be synchronized between MSN.com, a new Cross-platform MSN application, and Microsoft's Cortana voice helper.
MSN.com is still a popular portal, thanks to several versions of IE browsers that have been set as the default home page over the years. It is not clear what the Bing app will mean for the entire Bing brand, and whether Microsoft is going to try to develop its search business by leveraging MSN's brand in the future.
