Windows Phone Senior Product director Gregg Shaliven July 6 News, Windows Phone Senior product director Gregg Shaliven (Greg Sullivan) recently received a media interview about Microsoft's recent developments, including Windows Phone 8 , Surface, Xbox Live, and why Microsoft will not launch its own Windows Phone, at least for now. Here are some interview records: Q: What about Windows phone sales? Obviously the evaluation is positive, but you never said anything about sales. A: I don't have the data to share, but I know that from the launch of some new handsets, the trends are positive, such as Lumia 900, Titan II, which are sold through the US at&t. We see a positive trend. I think it's a good situation now, 18 months after the launch of Windows Phone 7. Take a look at Android or the iphone and it takes a while to build a platform. Android is less than 10,000 programs at the beginning. From our point of view, there are a lot of things to do, everything is necessary, but not enough to take us to where we want to go, we need to go there; The first step is to develop a good software that users like. Initially, Windows phone had only 5 languages, only nine hardware, and the area was limited, and it was expected to sell. If you log on to hundreds of networks worldwide, push a high-end machine to better predict what will happen. We know that something is going to happen because we understand that our long-term strategy is to develop a good mobile phone that users love, and we really care about the user experience. So we start there, and then we begin to strengthen the developer ecosystem and platform, and we have to have programs. Our program volume just over 100,000, this is an important milestone, to this point, you can make the system better run, a good cycle appears, this is the need to do a step. Yesterday, we started to upgrade Tango MCR3, a commercial upgrade that could support new devices and languages, enter new markets, support China's WCDMA, and reduce the size of mobile phones, and handset manufacturers can make 256MB handsets, with low prices, such as Lumia 610. All of this means that we are expanding, we are entering more areas, we are entering more networks, we can penetrate new areas and support more languages. We start with good products, and then get more and more developers, and then into more areas, to build more cooperation, such as Nokia, but also with long-term partners HTC, Samsung and so on. We work closely with operators. We also carry out marketing to bring a variety of positive thrust to the ecosystem cycle, which takes time. It's been 18 months, and we have a long-term foothold. It is quite clear that theWindows 8 combination. Last week we talked about the fact that Windows Phone 8 shares the kernel with Windows 8. Looking at the Windows 8 user interface, it also uses the Metro style, which enables symbiosis and collaboration between mobile and desktop platforms. Windows is so huge in the industry that it can bring terrible power. Our efforts bring value in the user interface that Windows Phone uses. We have argued that Android mostly copied the iphone interface, and they have the ability to make gadgets that are different programs that are not necessarily associated with the main program on the phone, and most of all, they use multiple screens to display icons and start programs. Within these programs, the user interface framework becomes less apple-flavored and less consistent. Everywhere is not perfect. The general direction is the same, a bit like saying: "Here we have this form of icon to get you into the program." "We want to be able to quickly display the surface and the information, so that users spend less time without getting into the program." Our approach is to catch up, but this is not enough, we have to continue to do such things, which is what we are doing. Q: How does Windows Phone 8 Use this approach in the future? From the beginning, I have a WP phone, it has been up to 7.8 systems, but no shared kernel, and did not get other good features. How much will this affect? A: This is a shift in the structure of a generation, which we have considered. We've been trying to do the right thing, which means that when Windows Phone 8 is released, we try to do our best, so we're positioned for the next generation of hardware, primarily to see which hardware-dependent features are effective in the new core. Soon, we will support multi-core CPUs (such as Lumina 900), support three new display resolutions, support removable SD cards, and support NFC. Much of what we do, the new core frees up many new functions, are directly or indirectly related to hardware, and most of the existing devices are not using these hardware. Make Windows Phone 8 as good as possible, which makes it more meaningful to take advantage of a new generation of hardware. At the same time, there are two very important things to do. One is to adjust the new user interface to the existing phone by starting the screen. Q: Do you think this is enough? Will the new Start screen get the user back? Obviously, they might think: "Well, I can't use Windows Phone 8, I've bought a Nokia Lumia." "Is the Windows Phone 7.8 user interface enough?" A: Existing devices will continue to be upgraded. Windows Phone 7.8 will come out and it has a new start screen. Nokia has also added and improved services and applications, such as maps. Nokia supports the new Lumia camera scenario model, adding some core functionality. Although the user'sLumia 900 does not have an NT kernel, but can get the most obvious user experience of Windows Phone 8, which feels like Windows Phone 8. Users also receive Nokia's enhanced programs and services, and Windows phone supports many programs and services that define the OS, such as SkyDrive, Xbox Live. Q: As a gamer, I am interested in a question, what are the limitations of the shared kernel? You have DirectX, you have Havok physics engines, and the boundaries between Xbox games, because theoretically, these games can run on Windows Phone, can it run on a mobile device? And you're saying that Windows Phone can't run the Xbox Live Street tour versus platform arcade game? A: The developer's imagination is the limit of the platform, especially in the local code we send to the developer, the SDK that we provide, which is essentially the same kernel, with the same hardware and the PC-like effect. What developers can think of, that's the limit. In other words, there is a difference in I/O patterns and differences in control mechanisms and sensors. With accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS, compasses, cameras, microphones, you can achieve more in mobile games. However, developers do not have the same control, although it can be imitated, is still different. This is quite interesting and we want to see what the developer launches. In Boston, I experienced LTE, which has a bandwidth and download speed of 15mbps, faster than my home network broadband, so that my tablet and notebook have the same CPU and GPU architecture. With DirectX and translates, I have the same graphics API, with this bandwidth, to bring new, interesting possibilities, Windows phone can connect to the Xbox Live network, not asynchronous, to achieve a new degree of integration, not only graphics, but also interactive. We don't just copy the video game experience on the phone, but also provide the right experience for different devices. This is what we think is going to happen because users don't want to replicate the phone experience on a game console, which can throw away some good experiences. Q: Microsoft wants to occupy a market with a limited number of emerging markets and budgets, and you have again improved the hardware specs. Do you plan to let Windows Phone 7.8 hit the emerging markets and budget limited market and let Windows Phone 8 battle Android in the high-end market? Do Windows Phone 8 devices degrade specs? A: The two strategies are not mutually exclusive, actually this is our strategy. We will continue to support the existing platform with a starting specification of 256MB, such as Lumia 610. Another point is the new structure, its specifications both rise and fall. Actual, support removable SD storage, which allows OEM enterprises to develop small storage space devices, users can expand their own, the composition of the cost of mobile phones can be lower. We will continue to work hard not only to support the expansion of Lumia 610, but also to allow a range of new devices to support expansion, and to improve efficiency through screen size. Q: With an autonomous surface tablet, you tell the world: "This is the shape of the tablet." "Will the same strategy appear on reregistering phone?" A: We are quite satisfied with what the hardware partners are doing. We believe they are working together to bring Windows Phone 8 to the market this year, and that's where we focus. Q: You've been in the hardware world for 38 years, and with military-level secrecy to ensure that surface is not leaking, Apple has done just as well. Do you really think Microsoft can fight it on Apple's battlefield? The Xbox is a huge success and it's still a success, and Windows 7 is quite popular, but Zune and Vista are not. A: In two areas of mobile phones and tablets, we feel that there are unique opportunities for Microsoft. Windows 8 will be an industry success. This can be guaranteed. We will continue to do something innovative, as you can see on the phone. Innovation from partners will continue. This is a good year and the pattern will be reshaped. Q: Will Windows Phone 8 affect performance or battery endurance? A: For notebooks, part of the new architecture used to be advantageous, and for decades it has power management capabilities. We learn from this and take these features to Windows Phone 8. We have been focusing on these aspects during development.
