According to the Forbes magazine website, a new forecast by emarketer, a market research firm, shows that mobile advertising will have more revenue than desktop ads by 2017.

The leap-forward growth will be dominated by mobile search advertising, emarketer said. Mobile search advertising revenue accounted for total search advertising revenue from 2% in 2010, to 22% this year, and will continue to increase to 60% in 2017.

Display ADS--ranging from banner ads to video ads to Facebook's "sponsored content" (sponsored Stories) and Twitter's "message promotion" (promoted Tweets)--are relatively slow to move. But the emarketer company predicts that by 2017, the amount of mobile-display advertising will reach half of all mobile advertising revenue.

This is an amazing change. In the past few years, such changes have been hitting companies such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo. Some companies have begun to pander to this change and are moving into mobile, such as Facebook. But the key problem now is that mobile advertising is cheaper than desktop advertising.

In the latest report, EMarketer's forecasts for 2013 mobile advertising were higher than the company's previous forecasts, at least for search and display ads. The report predicts that revenue from mobile search advertising will increase from the previous $3.95 billion trillion to $4.34 billion trillion this year, and that mobile display advertising revenue will increase from the previous 3.38 billion dollars to $3.81 billion. Overall, all forms of mobile advertising revenue will increase by more than one times, to reach 8.5 billion of dollars.

Not all new mobile ad revenues come from Desktop search and display advertising spending. Some forms of mobile advertising, such as SMS ads, e-mail ads, classified ads, and potential customer ads, will not grow much during the forecast period.

In all types of advertising, video advertising is still the top of the list and is the fastest growing type of advertising on the mobile and desktop side. Its revenues are expected to increase by more than $4.1 billion trillion this year, to $9.2 billion trillion in 2017.
