The Wall Street Journal reported December 30 that Mongolia has begun to tack on coal mining, offering greater opportunities for foreign companies to invest in the mine. Mongolia's Tabantalagai (Tavan Tolgoi) coal mine is located in the southern Gobi desert near the border of northern China, with coal reserves of about 6.4 billion tons, the second largest coal mine in the world, after China's Shengli coalfield. Japanese and South Korean bidders have expressed interest in developing the mine after the Mongolian government abandoned plans to develop the entire coal mine with contracted miners. This is a major change in the Mongolian government's mining strategy. The deadline for investors to submit proposals is January 17 next year.
