In an interview last week, Rick Osterlo, the president and chief operating officer of Motorola Mobility (29.85,-1.14,-3.68%) (Motorola), said at a midday news in Beijing September 8 that he was confident Moto X can be the world's top smartphone, even if it takes 10 years. "We will work to develop Moto X until it is known to everyone," says Osterlo. This may take 10 years, or two years. It doesn't matter to us. Motorola is carrying the latest Moto X again. In Thursday, Motorola released its new Moto X and the lower-priced Moto G smartphone. The new Moto X has the same name as the previous generation, but has been upgraded in terms of components, size and material quality, and prices have declined. The phone will be available later this month. Lenovo has bought Motorola from Google (589.72,3.64,0.62%), a deal expected to be completed by the end of the year. Osterlo's slow-moving strategy indicates how Motorola will develop in the future. But the question of whether Motorola will continue to stick to its current strategy after Lenovo becomes Motorola's new owner has raised questions. Osterlo said Lenovo would fully support Motorola. "Lenovo knows all the details of our work and understands our strategy," he says. I am confident that what you see now will be our long-term strategy. Lenovo declined to comment because the deal had not been completed. Lenovo needs to be patient with Motorola's future growth in high-end markets, especially in developed countries such as the US. Apple (98.35,-0.62,-0.63%) and Samsung dominate these markets, while sales of the iphone and Galaxy S smartphones are clearly in the lead. Motorola currently shares 2.8% of the global smartphone market, up from 1% in the same period last year, according to IDC. Apple and Samsung accounted for more than 37% of the market share. Osterlo acknowledges that Motorola faces product awareness issues. The first generation of Moto X was praised for its hands-free operation and its customized appearance, but did not cause a warm response from the market. But this did not deter Osterlo. He said he would focus on bringing a better user experience and prompting consumers to eventually use Motorola's products. "We know very well how difficult it is to compete in the markets of developed countries," he said. The high-end mobile phone market in these countries has grown fast, but we will continue to insist. On the other hand, Motorola has achieved initial success in key developing markets such as India. In India, Moto X has become one of the top 3 high-end smartphones. In addition, the phone is doing well in Brazil. Osterlo said: "If we can achieve this result every year, we are confident to become one of the top companies." Moto x is about to enter the Mexican and German markets, and Motorola plans toCountries and other parts of Europe to launch the device. Last year, Motorola offered black and white Moto X, and this year brought more choices. Therefore, the consumer can buy directly from the store to the leather or wooden back cover of this phone.
