A recent project, which calls cold water resources from a nearby fjord to support the data-hall cooling system of the Norwegian Green Gables Data center, is said to have achieved remarkable results.

The Green Gables Data Center in Norway, its "faucet" from the nearby cold fjord. It is reported that this set of water cooling system contracted tenants are the main IT companies in northern Europe.

The Green Mountain is a Rennesoy island near the coast, with 21000 sq m (226000 sq ft). And on the Green Mountain, there is a building with concrete "mountains"--data center. All rack servers will be filled into the underground halls of the data center. The underground hall was said to have been a place where NATO munitions were stored.

The head of the project said it took months to negotiate with major tenants because it contained "complex design and business elements". However, the project has been successfully started and the plant is expected to be fully operational by early 2013.

"This is a critical moment for the Green Mountain, believing the market can accept such a new data center," said Knut Moulag, CEO of Green Mountain Data center. "We chose here because of its high-security facilities, lower operating costs and ' green ' certificates." ”

"We are also negotiating with several other local companies," Knut Moulag said. "This is attractive to large and medium-sized companies that are environmentally conscious and want to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions, and many of these advantages enable us to do that." ”

The investment arm of the project is Smedvig, a Norwegian shipping company, working with Ergogroup, a leading IT service provider in Scandinavia, and Lyse Energi, a power company.

The biggest highlight of the project is the ability to use cold water to reduce cooling costs. Rennesoy's fjord position makes Green Mountain's cooling system's "faucet" only 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit), and a steady supply of cold water makes the data center's cooling system more stable and reliable.

As an important part of the cooling system of many data centers, the chilled water generally needs the chiller, the large refrigeration unit and so on need large power consumption to deal with. In the face of higher energy consumption, the industry often consider the use of lower energy to replace cold, such as wind and water. (Compilation/Rock)
