New York Stock Exchange starts running "Community Cloud"

Hurricane Irene did not have a huge impact on the large data centers of NYSE Euronext, a data center that is strong enough to fight a once-in-a-century flood.

The 400,000-square-foot data center was officially built a year ago, in Mahwah, New Jersey, a fortress-style ordinary building. From the screen of VMware's large annual user conference, a picture of the data center appears more like a corporate office. The interior has 100,000 square feet of movable floor space.

The data center is surrounded by water on three sides of the river, while the rest is encircled by moats to prevent vehicles from entering.

The role of data centers in the U.S. economy is important. Feargal O ' Sullivan, vice President of technology platform Development at the New York Stock Exchange, says the New York Stock Exchange and other securities markets manage about 40% of the stock and options deals in North America through the data center.

The New York Stock Exchange Community cloud Platform was designed to ensure that its customers were able to trade fairly and ensure their maximum latency, and that any user could experience 70 microseconds (one out of 10,000 seconds) of round-trip information in the data center, O ' Sullivan said.

The cloud platform was released in June with two customers and now has four customers, O ' Sullivan said. He believes the cloud computing platform will save a significant portion of the cost of customers who are still running their own efficient trading systems so far.

With this cloud model, a user's application can run on a Windows system or a red hat system. The entire operation uses VMware Tools, O ' Sullivan said.

IDC Financial Insight Global risk director Michael Versace did not see any significant downside risks to the cloud approach being used by the New York Stock Exchange.
