In addition to Linksys business, Cisco also considered abandoning the WebEx brand and Cisco will announce the decisions as early as next week, the person said. A spokesman for Cisco said: "No comment on rumours and market rumors." In last week's earnings call, Cisco CEO Chambers John Chambers said it would cut some non-core businesses and lay off staff. In the past few months, analysts have predicted that Cisco may abandon its Linksys business. Cisco bought Linksys in March 2003 with 500 million dollar shares, and four years later, WebEx, a 2.9 billion-dollar takeover of Internet conferencing providers, aimed at expanding Cisco's consumer business. Cisco also closed the flip video camera business last month. Cisco said at the time that as part of its plan to adjust its operations, it was now deciding to quit some of its consumer businesses and restructure its remaining consumer business to support the company's five core businesses: routers, switches and services, synergies, infrastructure and video.
