The Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA), which was set up last year by many big companies in China, the US and the European Union, recently released the first set of usage models for cloud computing standards. The organization is pushing for common standards that apply to management security, operational routines and service descriptions, and urges cloud service providers to adopt these standards.

But it remains to be seen whether any cloud makers will adopt standards released by the Open Data Center Alliance.

But the size of the 280-strong economies of the alliance is staggering. The alliance claims that its members ' annual IT spending is as high as $100 billion trillion, which has forced many cloud makers to take notice of the alliance and attaches great importance to its standardization efforts.

Members of the Open Data Center Alliance include BMW, USB, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Hyatt International, Shell and Disney Internet labs. Among the board members of the Alliance are Chinese longevity, China Unicom and other large enterprises.

The first "use Model" collection released by the federation is designed to fix problems caused by a lack of rules for creating and terminating virtual machines.

"How to start, terminate, create, pause a virtual machine is certainly not a selling point for cloud vendors," said Andrew Feig, executive manager of the technical Advisory group at the financial services company, UBS. UBS is also one of the board members of the Open Data Center Alliance. "But it raises a lot of problems and we have to develop 4 different approaches for 4 different vendors." ”

This 6 to 10 page "usage Model" is designed to provide a brief overview of the security and operations guidelines for cloud vendors. At the same time, the alliance is working with a number of standard organizations to determine whether this group of use models will provide a basis for future cloud computing standards.

"These usage models should not be difficult to implement, they should be very pragmatic and very straightforward for cloud providers." "Feig said.

Security elements are a major concern of the Alliance, the Alliance released a set of four security levels: Bronze class, basic security, silver level, to meet the safety needs of the enterprise level, the gold level, to meet the security needs of the financial industry, platinum level, can meet the needs of military security.

These security requirements are designed to ensure that the system can be "tamper-proof", fraud-proof, but also set the security resources to share the special features of the rules. The alliance's security plan also includes rules for managing keys, patches, and software versions.

The Federation will also require its members to follow these usage models.

Other use models will set some standard units of measurement to make it easier to compare various services.

For example, if a user needs to buy a server, the federation's standards provide a clear definition, as well as metrics to compare the performance of each type of server.
