If all goes according to plan, Red Hat will be the first Open-source software vendor to make more than 1 billion dollars a yearly income. This will be a turning point for the open source software community. The open source community has always believed that their community-based approach to development is feasible, even superior, and alternative to traditional software development methods.

' I think we're going to see a fundamental shift in where technological innovation will take place, from the labs of several software companies to the effort to Jim Whitehest the vast open-source software, ' said Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst.

As Linux, Apache Web server, Perl, Apache, Hadoop, OpenOffice, GIMP, and dozens of other open source software programs put more pressure on commercial software, open source software has certainly brought chaos to the proprietary software world in the past few years. But what is the heavyweight product of tomorrow's Open source software? Here are five projects that require close attention in 2012. These projects may form the basis of new business and new industries. These projects may also be the focus of developers and managers simply because they can accomplish tasks more easily or cheaply.

1.Nginx

For most of the past 10 years, the choice of Web server software has been stable. Apache has been applied to most Web servers, while Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Service) is used for many other servers. In the past few years, however, the third nginx has been growing in the market because it can handle high-volume communications easily.

According to Nginx software developers, Nginx is now running on 50 million different internet domains, accounting for about 10% of the Internet. Nginx is particularly widely used in sites with very large volumes of traffic, such as Facebook, Zappos, Groupon, Hulu, Dropbox, and WordPress. Not surprisingly, the creator of this software, Igor Sisov (Igor Sysoev), designed Nginx software in 2004 to handle a large number of users who use the network at the same time, with a maximum of 10,000 connections per server. Andrew Alexeev, co-founder of the company, said it was a very Andrew Alexiev structure. Nginx Company provides commercial version of the Nginx software.

The coming year will be a good one for nginx. Nginx last year received 3 million of dollars from venture capital firms, including venture capitalists backed by Dell's CEO Michael Dell. Nginx and Jet-stream collaborate to provide Nginx software for the software vendor's CDN (Content Delivery Network) package. The company also works with Amazon to optimize Nginx software for the AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud service.

In addition to being used for large web site operations, Alexiev expects Nginx to be more widely used in emerging cloud computing and shared services markets. He said the next major release of the Nginx software, expected to be launched next year, would be more appropriate for shared hosting environments. The software will be better able to respond to distributed denial of service attacks and will configure additional security features.

2.OpenStack

The OpenStack project entered the cloud computing field late. However, this project has an essential feature: scalability.

"We are talking about using OpenStack to run a cloud with 100 servers or 1000 servers," said Jonathan Bryce, chairman of the OpenStack Project Policy Committee. Other options there do not take this scale into account.

Since its launch in 2010, OpenStack has quickly won the support of IT companies in cloud computing, such as HP, Intel and Dell. OpenStack's contributors like to call their work the fastest-growing Open-source software project, with 144 companies and more than 2,100 participants. Dell has launched a software package called the Dell OpenStack Cloud solution that combines OpenStack with Dell's own servers and software. Hewlett-Packard also launched a beta version of the public cloud service using this technology.

OpenStack's core computing component is developed at the NASA Ames Research Center (Ames) for an internal cloud that stores a large number of spatial images. According to Chris Kemp, a former Ames Research Center responsible for developing OpenStack cloud controllers, NASA managers originally tried to use the Eucalyptus Software project platform, but found the software difficult to upgrade to the required level.

John Engates, chief technology officer at Rackspace, the managed hosting provider, says OpenStack is configuring many new features to make this software more suitable for enterprise applications in order to help more widely John Angues applications. A project called "Keystone" allows organizations to combine openstack with their own identity management systems or with an identity management system based on the Microsoft Active Directory or other LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). In addition, developers are developing a front-end portal for the software. Rackspace will also be stripped of this project as a fully independent entity, in the hope that it becomes an attractive option for more cloud providers.

Angus says 2011 will be the year to lay the groundwork for this product. But, I think, 2012 we will really start using this foundation in many private clouds and public clouds.

3.Stig

The past year has been a notable increase in the use of Cassandra, MongoDB, Couchdb and countless other relational databases. However, at the "NoSQL now" meeting held in September, there was more talk about the unpublished data storage Stig. If we're lucky, we'll see Stig in 2012.

Stig's defenders Say Stig is designed for the unique workloads of social networking sites. Stig was created by tagged, a software engineer at the social networking site, Jeson Lucas (Jason Lucas). He called the Technology a distributed graph database. Stig is designed to support a large number of interactive and social network applications. The architecture of this data store allows for a reasoned search that allows users and applications to find links between different parts of the information. Because Stig is written in the Haskell functional programming language, it can easily spread its workload across multiple servers.

Stig still has some mystique because it hasn't been released so far. But observers predict it is suitable for social networks and other applications that maintain a wide range of data. The need for social networking from the outset is different from other types of work, Lucas explains, so it will benefit from databases that fit its needs. You cannot be a relevant service in this field if you cannot upgrade to the size of the planet.

Stig is currently running on a server on the tagged web site, but the company is expected to extend Stig as its only database. The developer originally planned to open the source code for the software in December, but it was later postponed until sometime in 2012.

"What I see is very interesting," said Dan McCreary, a associates of semantic solutions for Kelly-mccreary &, a consulting firm. He praised the functional language architecture of the database. This architecture will make this database more convenient to deploy on multiple servers.

4.Linux Mint

Despite years of advocacy by Open-source software advocates, Linux has never been widely used in desktop computers. However, there has been a user-friendly Linux release as a substitute for Microsoft Windows software in use. In recent years, canonical company's Ubuntu has done its job, although the increasingly popular Linux min may be more easily used than Ubuntu.

Software engineer Clement Le Febourg (Clement Lefebvre) first created the Linux Mint after evaluating various Linux distributions in the online forum. In this job, Le Febourg has the idea of what it should be in this ideal release. Just as canonical thanks to the Debian Linux release for his very popular Ubuntu, Le Febourg Ubuntu as the basis for Linux Mint. Now, the Linux Mint Project has been funded by donors, ad revenue from their sites, and revenue from user searches. The last revenue was achieved through a controversial partnership with DuckDuckGo.

Linux Mint is designed for users who need only desktop operating systems and do not want to know more about how Linux works. This method makes it easy to install and run the software, and maintenance is not a problem. More than Ubuntu, Linux Mint emphasizes ease of use and generally does not use new features until new features prove themselves worth using.

For example, Linux Mint avoids some of the controversial "Unity" desktop interfaces. Canonical application of this interface makes it easier to migrate Ubuntu to the mobile platform. Instead, Linux Mint insists on using a more well-known and sophisticated GNOME interface.

In fact, this strict adherence to usability may help Linux Mint due to Ubuntu's damage. Linux Mint says its operating system is the world's fourth-ranked desktop operating system, behind Windows, Apple Mac and Ubuntu. Over the past year, Linux Mint has even surpassed Ubuntu for web browsing on DistroWatch Linux news sites. This metric reflects the popularity of Linux distributions. There is no doubt that 2012 will see more growth in Linux Mint.

5. Gluster

Does Red Hat give the storage software the kind of revolutionary changes it has brought to the UNIX operating system market? This October, Red Hat bought open source software company Gluster. The company's Open-source software is glusterfs and the filesystem is able to connect commercially SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) hard drives and NAS (network attached storage) systems to large, scalable storage pools. Red Hat plans to use the way it occupies the Linux operating system market to dominate the storage domain.

According to Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehest, the storage software market earns $4 billion a year, but that's not why Red Hat is interested in the technology. Instead, Red Hat is interested in finding a storage technology that makes it easier to migrate the cloud. ' We're looking for a place where Open-source software can be a more powerful way of technological innovation, ' he said. We are looking for some place to make a profit. There are no other solutions in this regard.

The software has some growth momentum, at least as far as the administrator downloads and tests the software. Over the past year, Glusterfs's downloads have increased by 300%. This November, the software downloads more than 37,000 times.
