The following is a quick start guide for OpenLDAP2.3, including the standalone LDAP daemon, SLAPD (8). This means that you can install and configure the OpenLDAP software with the necessary basic steps. It should be the same as other chapters of this document, a man page, and other materials that are available with each distribution (such as installation documentation) or on the OpenLDAP Web site (especially the OpenLDAP software FAQ).

If you plan to run the OpenLDAP software carefully, you should read this document before attempting to install the software.

Note: This QuickStart guide cannot be used for high strength certification and does not provide integrity or privacy protection services. These services will be covered in other chapters of the OpenLDAP Administrator's Guide.

Get software

You can obtain a copy of the software based on the instructions on the OpenLDAP download page (http://www.openldap.org/software/download/). New users recommend starting with the latest version.

Unpack the release pack

Select the original program to store the directory, change the directory to the current directory, and use the following command to decompress the distribution:

Gunzip-c openldap-version.tgz | Tar Xvfb-

And then get you back into the release directory:

CD openldap-version

You must replace version with the release number.

View Document

You should now review the copyright, license, readme, and installation documentation issued with the version. Copyrights and licenses provide warning information about the use, copying, and restriction of OpenLDAP software.

You should also look at the other chapters in this document. In particular, the compile and install OpenLDAP Software section of this document provides detailed information on the required software and installation steps.

Run Configure script

Before you compile your system you need to run the system to provide configure scripts to configure your distribution. The Configure script accepts a number of command-line options that allow or disable certain optional features of the software. Typically, the default options are OK, but you may need to change them. To get a list of command-line arguments accepted by the Configure script, use the--HELP option:

./configure--help

However, now that you have used this guide, we will assume that you are courageous enough to let configure decide what is best:

./configure

Assuming that configure does not dislike your system, you will be able to continue compiling the software. If configure is complaining, well, now you need to look at the installation section of the FAQ (http://www.openldap.org/faq/) and/or read the "compiling and installing OpenLDAP Software" section of this document.
