Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison says he does not care whether the company's X64 server business will be wiped out. But Oracle did once again launch a database application tool based on X64 servers.

Oracle's Database utility today is one of four new "engineering systems" that Oracle promises to launch in the coming weeks. Presumably this is the rumored "Exadata Mini" that Oracle plans to launch.

The Exadata with dual Xeon 5600 processors or eight Xeon 7500 or E7 processors is a rack server cluster running Oracle database and real creator clusters (RAC) extensions. They also include the hard disk subsystem, which can use algorithms to move data from flash memory and hard drives very quickly to and from the InfiniBand network, and to ensure that the database computing nodes are allocated resources. Exadata X2-2 is configured on Oracle's Sun Fire X4275 server, Exadata X2-8 is configured on the Sun Fire X4800 server.

Vice President of Oracle co-CEO mark. The Oracle Database utility is a "smaller, more compact package" that basically compresses a exadata cluster into two server nodes, placing storage, flash memory, and computing resources all in these two nodes, Hurd said in a webcast bulletin. Instead of connecting nodes together with the Quad Data Rate (QDR) InfiniBand switch, the Exadata system connects nodes together through cheaper, slower gigabit Ethernet switches, This is ideal for small and medium business and interdepartmental online transaction processing, as well as for the data warehouse workloads targeted by Oracle application tools.

The database utility is based on the company's Sun Fire X4370 M2 Server, consisting of two sun Fire X4270 M2 dual Xeon servers.

To support a relatively small database workload, Oracle has configured two Xeon X5675 processors per server, with six central 3.06GHz cores and 12MB L3 cache. Main memory for each server is 96GB (One-third of the memory slots reserved for future expansion), two 73GB 3.5-inch solid-state drives for storing database redo logs, and 10 capacity 600GB SAS hard drives for storing databases.

Each server node has two 500GB mirrored 2.5-inch back-end access SATA hard disks to host the operating system used by the utility, not Solaris UNIX, but Oracle's Enterprise Linux 5.5 operating system. Each server also has an in-house 4GB USB storage stick that presumably should be used to host Oracle virtual machines, and users can use Xen management programs to deploy virtualization to database utilities. In these two server nodes, the database utility has 12TB of raw storage space, in addition to redundant network, also equipped with redundant power supply and refrigeration system. The hardware is priced at 50,000 dollars.

There is no need to make a fuss about it, and there is no need to create confusion, presumably with little leeway.

However, this price does not include the cost of Oracle 11g database. You must purchase the 11g version of 11.20.2, Oracle strongly recommends that users purchase RAC for active-active or active-passive clusters between two server nodes. If you choose Active-active clustering, you must purchase at least four core license licenses; If you choose active-passive clustering, then you only need to purchase two core 1.1g. Active-Active configuration covers all 24 cores, while active-passive configuration can only mobilize 12 cores. If you purchase a 11g Enterprise license, you can transfer them to this application tool.

In addition to Oracle Enterprise Linux and 11g, the database utility has a compressed version of the management console called Oracle Utility Manager. Basically, you can convert a server running on a 11g database to a utility. All of the automatic memory and storage management features in the 11g database can be adjusted, and Utility Manager can detect and correct hardware and software problems, and the utility tool also has a telephone alert function that will automatically send Oracle engineers to repair failures when conditions arise.

Because the server, the operating system and the database software are all from Oracle, it can provide a package of the end of the service.

Oracle database application tools are now on the market. Oracle plans to sell through direct sales and hardware distribution channels and 10,000 independent software vendors certified through Oracle database application software.
