Oracle: We are important cloud providers

Earlier in April, Oracle's president Mark Hurd claimed that Oracle's SaaS (Software as a service, software as services) had reached $1 billion trillion in U.S. revenue, and the company had become the second-largest SaaS provider. Now, of course, SaaS is the first big provider of cloud computing company Salesforce.com, and its CEO Marc Benioff believes that while Oracle's cloud involves hardware, none of that hardware is a real cloud.

He then made a clear distinction between SaaS revenues and cloud "device" revenues, with Oracle's total SaaS revenue reaching 1 billion dollars. Hurd, who entered Oracle after leaving HP, was seen as the person who built the Oracle hardware business after acquiring Sun. While market commentators and analysts are disputing his performance, he is pleased with Hurd that Oracle is on the right track.

Tablet PC





Whether Oracle is involved in the hardware business or not, Oracle has no plans to enter the tablet market – ironically, a decade ago, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison first announced a move into the Internet computing equipment market, and last week he admitted Oracle was preparing Oracle's phone. But Hurd insists this does not mean that Oracle is not interested in the tablet market, only that Oracle is not interested in making tablet devices.





Hurd explains, "Our software is all for the iphone and the ipad, but we don't see how important those devices are to us." For Oracle, it is more important to have software designed for existing devices. But Hurd points out that Oracle has found a cloud of demand within the public sector market.
