Oracle claims that its new 12c database is faster and stronger than other databases, and that the new database will be able to serve multiple databases of different sizes and ranges based on the needs of specific users.

, senior vice president of database server technology Andy Mendelssohn said that for some reason, many Oracle customers were excited about 12c. "Customers tell us that they want a database, a service, an in-house deployment service," he said. ”

12c, which was launched in June, contains a widely publicized feature known as a "pluggable" database with many discrete databases in a single database, which Oracle says can fundamentally reduce operating costs.

Mendelsohn describes a scenario where an IT department can provide an end user with a menu of database options.

The
copper tier will be used for simple backups of less important databases, while the silver level will add Oracle's data guard to increase additional security. The top-level layer will contain real creator clusters and data Guard. Users can also choose a standard database size from the menu.

Mendelsohn also shows a new self-service configuration tool that is released with 12c. "In a few seconds, you can start and run," Mendelssohn, demonstrating that you can select a database just by clicking a few clicks.

at the same time, the database can be "unplugged" from different layers and transferred to other layers according to the priority changes.

The
pluggable database schema also provides a new Multi-Tenant form, which is used in SaaS (software as a service). You don't need to have all the customers share a single application instance, they will each get a pluggable database. He added, "the huge obstacle that people become SaaS providers has been removed." ”

in other words, Oracle's technology stack has become the basis for many SaaS vendors, and Oracle will presumably consider moving them to the latest products, including 12c databases.

One of the
suppliers is Salesforce.com, which recently announced a long-term partnership with Oracle. This cooperation also shows that Salesforce.com chief executive Marc Benioff and Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison have reconciled.

At the meeting, Mendelsohn also introduced the Oracle database backup logging recovery device (Oracle DB backup Logging Recovery appliance), which was launched in Sunday.

this device, which will be sold "sometime next year", can be extended to petabytes of data that differs from previous backup offerings and has been greatly improved to allow users to restore the system back to any point in time they choose.

Oracle has also launched a cloud-based backup service and the ability to replicate its database backup log record recovery device to Oracle's cloud.

Mendelssohn did not talk about Oracle's public cloud database as a service (launched in 2011), Ellison is expected to introduce the product and other public cloud services at the OpenWorld conference, and he will also introduce the upcoming database memory options. Currently, the memory option is still in the pre-test phase and will be launched next year.

Oracle hopes this memory option will help it win competition with other memory databases, such as SAP's Hana. SAP, in turn, wants customers who now use Oracle to run SAP apps to move to Hana.

Oracle's database architecture is "bloated" compared to Hana, and for database administrators, memory options can mean more work.

In addition, "As Oracle launches 12c, SAP's Hana has evolved from a database into a database-ready platform for implementing applications, such as predictive libraries, business functions, graphics processing, geospatial processing, mosquito-processing engines, and application server functions," says SAP. We are ready for the next generation of applications that will require these application management features from the local database. We think at this point they have fallen behind. ”

on the other hand, Mendelssohn repeatedly talked about the user's strong interest in 12c, most Oracle database customers have been waiting for a long time to upgrade, hoping to let others discover all the vulnerabilities.

has other considerations, "with a lot of security enhancements and multi-tenant, users are excited about 12c," said John Matelski, vice-president of independent Oracle, "but this deployment process is not simple, and many of our users have begun planning stages, The planning phase takes 6-9 months. ”

Other problems are no longer in Oracle's control, for example, how long it takes a third-party application vendor to validate its product. Before that, "We know we will get support from Oracle, but you don't know if you will get support from other suppliers." ”
