Europe's most important bitcoin payment and free online wallet service Bips recently suffered a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, with 1295 Bitcoin stolen in the past few days, worth more than 1 million dollars.
Bips CEO Chris Henriksen (Kris Henriksen) says most of the lost Bitcoin are owned by the company. Bips uses an algorithm based on the supply-demand relationship to calculate the amount of bitcoin needed and place it in a "hot wallet". The Bitcoin theft was not due to any flaw in the company's program code itself.
Henriksen also said that if the merchant chooses to convert the Bitcoin to the bank account immediately, it will not be affected by the incident.
Bips, in Copenhagen, Denmark, was hit by a massive DDoS attack on November 15. November 17, another round of attacks led the company to close its website. The company's management switch was overloaded, causing some connections to be interrupted.
"Unfortunately, despite multiple layers of protection, the attack still caused the system to crash, giving the attacker access and stealing some wallets," Bips said in a statement. "Bips that the two attacks were related, while the first DDoS attacks came from Russia or neighboring countries. November 19, the company has taken swift action to restore merchant payments and money transfer services, while closing all wallet functions for thorough analysis. The site's customer service also closed for a few days and reopened on November 22.
Under Bips's privacy policy, the company is not allowed to disclose user information to anyone, even government departments. The company will set up a system for the affected users of bitcoin wallets so that they can voluntarily sign a license document, allowing the Justice Department to conduct a thorough investigation and find the source of the attack.
