Flight Imaging (文慧) market analysis agency Ovum released market reports that optical fiber technology has finally opened up in the global broadband sector and made significant progress-instead of DSL. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2010, Global fiber broadband Internet access grew by 35% in the first quarter of 2011, while DSL terminals fell 5%, the agency reported. Fiber-optic Internet access is not subject to common copper wire (DSL usage) problems, which makes their network connections very fast. The report noted that the total number of optical connections reached 988,889 ports, up 182% from the first quarter of 2010. Ovum's study found that the Asia-Pacific region has the fastest growth in fiber connectivity-a region that has contributed 93% of the growth. China's infrastructure suppliers, Huawei, the center and Beacon Communications occupy the PON (passive fiber network) OLT (optical line terminal) port of the first three bits. Other regions, such as Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Central and South America, have reached their highest levels of history. In contrast, the report notes that the growth of DSL lines (DSL for broadband Internet connectivity standards) has been negative in some countries, mainly by the impact of fibre to FTTB (FTTH) or fiber to floor (s). Kamarini Ganguli, author of the report, Kamalini Ganguly, said in a statement: "Overall, the global Internet connection is increasing." Although the first quarter of 2011 was still in a downward trend, the annual shipments in all regions were already quite high, mostly driven by upgrades to fibre to household (FTTH) and fiber to Floor (FTTB) services. In fact, the first quarter of 2011 again created the VDSL2 (second generation very high speed Digital subscriber line) shipments record, up to 4.8 million ports. "Alcatel-Lucent is currently the leader in the VDSL/VDSL2 market with a market share of 42%, and Huawei and Ericsson are second to third in 22% and 8% respectively."
