Panasonic plans to transfer lithium battery production to Suzhou

The company intends to close the lithium-ion battery factory in Dabanfu Totsuka City in the 2012 fiscal year, and transfer the production capacity to the factory in Suzhou, China, May 2 News of Sina Science and technology. Panasonic wants to use China's cheap labor force to drive down production costs to resist South Korean manufacturers who have stepped up their offensive while the won has fallen.  Some 350 employees at the Totsuka plant will be assigned to other factories in the country for employment. Demand for lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones and laptops continues to grow, with most of Panasonic's lithium batteries being produced domestically in Japan, and the company plans to shift the capacity of its Totsuka plant to a lithium-ion battery factory that is being built near existing plants in Suzhou to boost its production to 50% by 2015.
