In the wake of other killer apps such as Pivotal HD and HAWQ, EMC also unveiled plans for the development of its next-generation computing platform, Pivotal One. As a Start-ups company, Pivotal has integrated different businesses and departments from EMC and VMware, as well as defining the strategic objectives of IT as a Service and building the next generation PaaS platform. From the outside world, Pivotal has entered the state as quickly as possible.

From Pivotal's main business point of view, including Hadoop, PaaS platform, database, etc. is not unique in the industry, and some products even hard to call the best. However, in Pivotal's view, integrating these products and technologies to provide customers with a truly enterprise-class platform is the company's greatest competitive edge. Cloud to increase data: Pivotal perfect interpretation

The plan to set up Pivotal has started with Paul Maritz's departure as VMware CEO last year as EMC's chief strategy officer. According to David Menninger, demand from cloud computing, big data, mobile and social networking is on the rise. Enterprises urgently need to establish new platforms and applications, while ensuring enterprise-class features and good user experience. Pivotal's role is to optimize the combination of PaaS and Big Data to provide customers with greater business value.

It is understood that Pivotal Corporation has established a complete integration schedule, while a different person (Pivotal platform and product manager Scott Yara) control different products from different companies. David Menninger said it is an important foundation for the company's rapid growth and synergy.

Create a new platform for the new era

There is also a new platform, Pivotal One, which was launched with the company. According to David Menninger, Pivotal's name is derived from "turning around, transitioning" and Pivotal One is also positioned as "a new platform for the new age." The Pivotal One platform consists of four parts: data analytics, cloud automation, application development and expert services. Among them Pivotal HD, HAWQ and Greenplum database and GemFire ​​memory technology become the basis of data analysis; Cloud Foundry, vFabric, Spring development framework provides customers with a flexible automated cloud and application platform; Also worth mentioning is that Pivotal Labs and Data Science Labs will also provide expert services to customers in agile development and accelerated analysis projects.

Pivotal One platform

David Menninger said Pivotal One is not a simple product bundle, but a truly optimized consolidation platform, truly the first enterprise-class PaaS platform in the industry and a data-centric PaaS platform. The company has invested more than 700 engineers, research and development of products. For customers who already use Greenplum Database or vFabric, they can quickly and seamlessly migrate to Pivotal One and deploy as a team, providing customers with sufficient flexibility.

It is understood that the Pivotal One platform will be officially released in the fourth quarter of this year.

Into the open source community efforts to build an ecosystem

Including Apache Hadoop and Cloud Foundry, people will inevitably associate Pivotal with the open source community. In response, David Menninger said Pivotal's creation of an independent company is intended to better integrate into the open source community because of differences between EMC and Pivotal and VMware when it comes to open source. While Pivotal is actively involved in driving the growth of open source Hadoop for Apache Hadoop, David Menninger also said that SQL + Hadoop is a source of competitive advantage for the Pivotal Hadoop distribution and that the HAWQ technology will remain private and will not contribute to the open source community. Cloud Foundry will remain open source but will also release paid versions in the future.

Also with MapR, formerly Greenplum's Hadoop partner MapR, David Menninger said Pivotal encourages customers to use their own Hadoop distribution, but will also continue to support customers using MapR. Pivotal will also shift more focus to Apache-based Pivotal HD.

The construction of the ecosystem is also the focus of Pivotal's next step in the Chinese market, and the accumulation of EMC and VMware in the country will also provide some help to them. Pivotal China head Liu Weiguang introduced Pivotal is actively looking for partners with excellent applications Installed Base in large financial, telecommunications and other industries to encourage them to migrate to Pivotal platform. In addition, the company will soon launch partner certification programs for Greenplum and Pivotal HD to respond positively to the Pivotal platform in China.
