Veto proposal

Internet name and number distribution company held a council meeting in Portugal on 30th to vote on the proposal of ". XXX" as a dedicated domain name for pornographic websites. After the members of the Board had individually stated their reasons and voted, the Council eventually rejected the proposal by 9 votes against and 5 votes. The whole meeting was broadcast live through the Internet.

Almost all of the board members who voted against it said they feared that ICANN would face a suspicion of interfering with the site's content once the proposal was passed, AP reported.

Those who oppose the use of the ". XXX" domain name argue that using the domain name will only provide users with more convenient access to pornographic sites and legalize pornography, while supporters say it helps limit internet pornography and filter pornographic sites.

Three-degree veto

The proposal to set up the ". XXX" domain name was proposed by the ICM registered company in Florida, USA. ICANN, the Internet's top-tier domain operator, first vetoed the proposal in 2000 for fear of interfering with the content of the site.

ICM made the application again in 2004 and recommended the establishment of a body responsible for formulating policies to keep ICANN away from the suspicion of interfering with the site's content. Last May, ICANN's board members agreed that the terms of the agreement were not clear enough to veto the deal again.
