"According to the Xinhua news Agency," Doha, Qatar Prime Minister Hammad Ben Jasim recently criticized the news media for rendering and amplifying the debt crisis in the UAE's Dubai emirate. "It was an international media, followed by some Arab media, to render and magnify the Dubai debt crisis," Hamad said in a media interview. "It is normal for companies to restructure their debt at a sensitive time when the world is experiencing a financial crisis," he said. Hamad said he was confident that Dubai would get out of the crisis and revive the economy as soon as possible. The Dubai government announced at the end of November that, as a first step in the Dubai World Group's debt restructuring plan, it would require all creditors to agree to the group's delay in repaying the sum owed to US $59 billion. The news triggered turmoil in global financial markets, when the securities markets of the US, Europe, Japan and Gulf oil-producing countries plummeted. (Wang Podukian) (9H3)
