8.2.1 Manage DNS servers

You need to run the Rfdns Configuration tool under the KDE environment with root privileges. You can start the DNS Configuration tool in the following ways:

In the System main menu, select "Management tools → system Management →dns server Configuration Tool";

Type Rfdns directly at the command line or at the shell prompt.

8.2.1.2 Start and stop DNS service

Open the Rfdns Configuration tool, as shown in the following illustration.

Rfdns Main interface

In the console tree on the left side of the main window, click the DNS server node.

To start the DNS service, select "operations → all tasks → start" menu.

To stop the DNS service, select "operations → all tasks → stops" in the menu;

To restart the DNS service, select "operations → all tasks → start again" in the menu.

The result of the action is displayed in the message window to the right of the main window. Administrators can also perform the start, stop, and restart tasks of a DNS server by using the following command at the command line terminal:

#/etc/init.d/named Start

#/etc/init.d/named Stop

#/etc/init.d/named Restart

8.2.1.3 let the DNS server use forwarders

Open the Rfdns Configuration tool, and in the console tree on the left side of the main window, click the DNS server node.

Select action → Properties in the menu, open the DNS Server Properties dialog box, and select Enable forwarders to add the IP addresses of other DNS servers that can act as forwarders for this server.

Forwarders are configured to be DNS servers that provide recursive services to other DNS servers. Once a forwarder is specified, it can be used to help resolve any DNS names that the server cannot respond to.

In the console tree on the left side of the Configuration Tool main window, click Forward Lookup Zone. Select action → new zone in the menu to eject the New Zone Wizard. Press "Next" to continue, and the selection area type interface appears as shown in the following figure. To start, we're going to create a whole new area and click on "Standard Main area".

Press "Next" to determine the name of the new zone, and if you are applying for a set of domain names, such as redflag-linux.com, enter the level two field instead of the subdomain or host name. See figure below.
