Red Hat new Virtual storage devices note a tricky problem for it stores: Amazon's public cloud uses old but still-running applications.
When a company loads its workloads into Amazon Web Services (AWS), it is usually a new application-the legacy application will have no impact on the cloud and many companies.
The Amazon Network Service (AWS) Red Hat Virtual storage device-based on gluster technology-adds the POSIX standard. This means that it can take a traditional UNIX application. (POSIX is the standard for applications and operating systems that govern how to interact, ensuring that an application written through the POSIX operating system can run on other POSIX operating systems.) Most Unix applications are POSIX compliant.
Red Hat Storage Product Marketing manager Tom Trainer said: "Cloud computing has not been with POSIX compatible-aws, at&t, Microsoft are great cloud companies, but the use of their cloud products must rewrite these old applications." ”
Red Hat says NAS devices allow companies to aggregate their Amazon data block storage (EBS) and flexible Compute Cloud (EC2) instances into a virtual storage pool that can handle these legacy UNIX applications.
Not all UNIX is the same
As Red Hat says, older companies have only Intel based UNIX applications, not UNIX applications running on RISC. New network-centric companies do not need this functionality and still have these UNIX applications running workloads. Bernd Harzog, chief analyst at virtualization practice, says the installation base across Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX UNIX servers on non-Intel platforms is huge. Without this thing, it's easy to get into the clouds.
Vanessa Alvarez, an analyst at Forrester Research, agreed to move the existing older applications to AWS, saying there would be a cost-benefit analysis. She said: "If red Hat can make it easier, it's great, but it depends on whether it's economically meaningful." Does it cost a lot of resources to move these applications or do architects adapt to the cloud? Or are you looking for an organization to move these applications?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux more calmly helps customers move their applications and expand their data center to the public cloud. In fact the meaning of doing so will vary by customer.
