In the afternoon of January 10 Beijing time, BlackBerry handset maker Rim is negotiating with local operators to block pornographic sites in its BlackBerry service in Indonesia. The move is backed by a massive internet clean-up effort by Indonesian authorities. In a statement, Rim said it was negotiating with local mobile operators to seek "alerts, complaints and filtering solutions". Tifatul Sembiring, Indonesia's minister of Communications and Information technology, said rim must begin shielding pornographic sites from January 21 or face judicial action that would include a ban. A spokesman for the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said this could include masking BlackBerry's Web browser capabilities. "Indonesia is not the only country to carry out such action," said Heru Sutadi, a member of Indonesia's telecoms regulator. The Middle Eastern countries are also very harsh on rim. Given the huge market in Indonesia, I believe rim will abide by the rules. "The Indonesian government will meet rim and 6 mobile operators on January 17 to block pornography sites," he said. Indonesian telecoms officials say their target is pornographic sites, not rim. Most Indonesian operators will block such sites. "If Rim agrees to filter pornographic sites, they can spend two or three days meeting with operators to discuss them." If they do not want to filter pornographic sites, we will require rim to shut down the entire browser service. Indonesian telecoms officials said Rim had repeatedly violated government requirements, including blocking pornographic websites and setting up a server in Indonesia to facilitate the investigation of criminals by regulators. The Indonesian government interrupted the new BlackBerry model in June 2009 and asked Rim to establish a branch office with after-sales service in Indonesia. After 2 months, the BlackBerry set up a service center in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and the Indonesian government lifted the freeze. Rim opened a certified repair center in Jakarta last August 21 to repair rim handsets sold in Indonesia. In recent days, the UAE, Saudi and Indian regulators have threatened to shield BlackBerry services from safety. In August and October, RIM has defused the risk of blocked operations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE and is still negotiating with the Indian government. (slides)
