CNET Technology Information Network April 19 International report Rim chief executive said video is still a long way from being a killer app on smartphones, but even so, rim is still committed to the technology development of mobile video transmissions. RIM BlackBerry, Apple's iphone and the Motorola droid and other smartphones are forming a boom, though they take up 30 times times more network bandwidth than conventional handsets. Applications such as video have strained the bandwidth of the mobile phone network, dropping the message and increasing service outages. Operators have had to spend billions of of dollars to upgrade their networks and buy more wireless bands. RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis said in Toronto in Friday: "Video is not a killer application on a smartphone." Still, video transmission has been a huge challenge for mobile networks. If you think browsing the web is a test of the current data network, think about the live phone video or download it. "The BlackBerry's bandwidth-application design has been praised for its use by RIM's own server," the BlackBerry said. In addition, the BlackBerry server also undertook network browsing, social programs traffic tasks. Doing so allows users to surf the Internet more quickly and securely. Lazaridis says the design makes RIM's mobile phone three to eight times times more efficient than its opponents ' machines in using network bandwidth. He said Rim would invest more money in research on mobile video transmission technology. In 2006, RIM acquired Slipstream, a company dedicated to data acceleration, compression, and network optimization.
