Sina Science and technology news Beijing time of June 20, although RIM's share price tumbled in Friday and announced that it would start layoffs, government officials and business leaders at the company's headquarters still firmly support the Canadian most famous company. RIM's shares plunged 21% per cent to $27.75 in the Nasdaq market in Friday at a 5-year low after announcing quarterly results that could disappoint the market and cut full-year earnings forecasts. In addition, as part of a streamlined organization, the company will cut some of its staff to cope with the decline in performance. "Rim is going through a tough time," said Brenda Halloran, the city's mayor, Brenda Haroland, who is headquartered in Waterloo, Canada. But she added, "We are full of confidence in their future." "As a former insurance center and auto manufacturing base, Waterloo, near Toronto, has become a Canadian technology hub, attracting many of RIM's biggest rivals, including Google. Rim, however, remains dominant in the region, with more than 20 buildings at its headquarters standing at the University of Waterloo for four weeks, the birthplace of rim. Its trademark was also hoisted on the façade of the city's main complex. Halloran says Rim has recruited about 1000 employees a year since 2006, and the company's growth has turned the once-moribund university town into a busy city. In fact, while Guelph (Guelph) and Cambridge are considered suburbs of Toronto, many technology companies have established offices in Waterloo and provided a shuttle bus for staff living in Toronto. Both government officials and business leaders in Waterloo agree that the city is already highly diversified, so even if rim suffers a more severe decline, it is perfectly capable of coping. Waterloo Chairman Ken Sai Ken Seiling said rim is only part of the broader economy in the region. Marvell (Max Triangle), president of the Lorieres University of Canada (Wilfrid Laurier University) and director of the Canadian Regional Economic Development Organization, "Science Triangle" (Max Broux Blouw), said: " We have seen many businesses thrive and decline.
