In Monday, Nomura said Samsung would overtake Nokia as the world's largest smartphone maker in the quarter, ending Nokia's 14-year monopoly, the June 13 Evening News of Beijing time. Nomura also points out that Apple will overtake Nokia in second place by next quarter, while Nokia is only third. "Nokia launched the Communicator in 1996 and has been leading the global smartphone market since then," Nomura analyst said in a survey note. But 14 years later, Nokia is about to cede its throne. "In the smartphone market, Nokia has grown significantly behind Apple's iphone and Google's Android phone," he said. At the lower end of the market, Nokia faces strong challenges from its Asian rivals. Overall, however, Nokia's mobile phone shipments are still higher than Samsung, mainly because Nokia still has a strong advantage in the traditional mobile phone market and a huge sales network in emerging markets. Nokia announced in February this year that it would abandon the Symbian system and use Microsoft's Windows Phone platform instead. May 31, Nokia also issued a profit warning, said the second quarter of fiscal year 2011 revenue will not meet the previous forecast. (Li Ming)
