Now more and more enterprises, in particular, large and medium-sized enterprises, the need for server virtualization than the bottom of the housing server configuration requirements are much higher, in the server virtualization solution there are many characteristics of different, incompatible technical components, we must make a decision and in the coming years to bear all the results resulting therefrom.

Gartner recently released this year's X86 server virtualization rankings, and the competitive relationship between business support options has shifted somewhat, but VMware and Microsoft continue to dominate the market with other proprietary and even a range of open source alternatives.

Hardware split in server

In our normal physical server for the hardware split and division, there are often two kinds of processing methods, one is based on the virtual machine management program to split the system into multiple sets of virtual machines, and then in turn to run it in the management program on the internal operating system, Another is to use containers to run the application sandbox on the shared operating system kernel and file system.

The Magic Quadrant presented by Gartner is focused on the content and technology of the hypervisor, whether it is open source or closed, and ignores the wide range of pure open source options available today. Again, while VDI and cloud have become two significant drivers of server virtualization, they still do not consider virtual desktop middleware and the cloud controller extensions that point to these server virtualization tools.

Large-scale data center giants tend to build their own technology derivatives, including Linux, hypervisor, cloud Controller, and system management tools, etc., which will not be included in the Magic Quadrant rankings.

Server virtualization technology in whose hands?

Many of the friends who know the server and virtualization industries may not be unfamiliar, and VMware, the biggest maker of virtualization, undoubtedly has a large portion of the market share in virtualization, but Microsoft has relied on its Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management program and the System Center console in recent years. According to Gartner, about 70% of the enterprise data center X86 workloads are already running in virtualization, and VMware is encountering a degree of hindrance in driving its server virtualization business.

The growth of Hyper-V and KVM has also given a lot of competitive pressure, the latter belonging to a set of open source virtual machine management programs, mainly by Red Hat, Canonical, IBM and other vendors who want to be able to get another set of alternatives outside the Open source Xen management program.

VMware has an absolute share of the existing workload, but Gartner analysts believe VMware's share and influence is less pronounced for new workloads that are about to join the virtualization camp. The reason for this is simple: Microsoft is posing a serious threat to prices. As long as you buy a version of the Windows Server datacenter and run it on your own server device, the price includes the right to use Hyper-V virtualization technology without any restrictions.

Chinese companies are not vegetarian

According to the findings of the market research firm, with the development of server virtualization technology in the country in recent years, many domestic manufacturers have begun to focus on this aspect, it is understood that Huawei has already launched its own version of the Xen Virtual Machine management program in 2011, in China, Brazil, Russia, India and other markets have begun to sell, its Fusionsphere virtual machine management program can be on a host server to accommodate up to 512 sets of virtual machines, a single cluster of virtual machine capacity is up to 3000 sets.

Through cluster aggregation, Huawei has been able to put up to 80000 virtual machine systems under the same management framework. The Xen implementation provides 160 compute cores and 2TB of memory through a single physical server, with a level sufficient to match esxi, Hyper-V, and KVM. In addition, the company has succeeded in helping Xen's XenServer commercial derivative version recover, thanks largely to last summer's release of all the functional components of the XenServer 6.2 stack.
