Shenwey: Cloud computing creates new ideas for software development

Shenwey, vice president and Chief Cloud Strategy officer of Microsoft Greater China, said in an exclusive interview with reporters in the era of cloud computing, software developers need new ideas in architecture design and profit patterns, and programmers should think about which applications need to be seamlessly migrated from private cloud to public cloud in the application development process.

When it comes to partnering strategies, Shenwey says Microsoft will encourage existing partner channels to better sell cloud-related services or new models in the era of cloud computing. When Microsoft's business model goes from the licensing model to the licensing subscription model, the partner ecosystem also needs to follow this trend to enhance the sales capacity.

Shenwey: Hello.

Microsoft cloud operating system involves three major products

Reporter: Today, please Wei to give us a comprehensive understanding of Microsoft's cloud computing strategy. First of all, from the definition of cloud computing, many vendors know a definition of NIST (US Standards Agency), so is Microsoft's definition of cloud computing consistent with NIST?

Shenwey: I'll talk a little bit about Microsoft's cloud computing. In fact, we released the concept of the cloud operating system in September, so the Microsoft cloud operating system actually contains three very important products: Windows Server, Windows Azure, and system Center, These core products support the three services of the standard Agency's infrastructure, namely, service, platform, service, software, and services, especially at the level of infrastructure, service, where Microsoft Windows Server and System Center can help users build private cloud and hybrid cloud At the public cloud level, infrastructure is embodied through Windows Azure. Go up again, on the platform as a service side, we build the private cloud through Windows Server, System Center, and SQL Server, which, of course, includes our. NET Framework and our compilation environment.

Windows Azure, Windows Server, plus System Center can help some hosting vendors to provide a range of public cloud services, as well as a range of support at the platform-service level. In addition, Microsoft has been advocating to give users a range of choices, not only infrastructure services, platform services, and software services, we also provide customers with a range of choices for their business needs in the private cloud, the public cloud, and the hybrid cloud, as required by our customers.

Journalist: That is to say, whether it's from SaaS, PaaS, and the three main services of IaaS, as well as public, private, and mixed deployments or deliveries, Microsoft offers such services.

Shenwey: Yes.

Interviewer: So you see these two, from the way the service is deployed and the way it deploys, whether the two can be interleaved, such as a PAAs public cloud, or a private cloud of SaaS.

Shenwey: Yes, it can be crossed. However, there are many challenges in cross business, especially in a framework such as a hybrid cloud. While it is possible to have a separate operating system to support the construction of private clouds and public cloud construction, the most challenging is when applications need to migrate from private cloud architectures to public cloud architectures. There are indeed cases like this. For example, some scientific research, such as DNA testing, the initial level of data may be relatively small, can be completely in the private cloud or billion cluster server environment to operate, when the data extended to a large scale, from the application perspective, may wish to extend to the public cloud environment. But how to ensure that applications can migrate across private and public clouds, there are many challenges in how to cross the private cloud and public cloud from the application management level. The real need for a hybrid cloud is to have an efficient tool to reduce complexity from development tools, application development and application management, and customer access management. Microsoft's cloud operating system already has the capability. Low。

Interviewer: I remember when I interviewed you last year, you mention that Microsoft already has a full-service capability in SaaS, PAAs and IaaS, as well as public, private, and mixed clouds, and what are the updates to the cloud services that Microsoft has delivered this year after it has delivered a series of big new products?

Shenwey: I am very optimistic about this year's series of products, as you just said, in fact, over the years, Microsoft has been on the Windows Server and Windows Azure on the continuous evolution, this year from the latest Windows Azure and our latest Windows Server2012, what we really can be very certain of is that the operating systems we already have are spanning the concept of just one server before, and more about managing a very large data center, or the ability of a cloud's data center. Such ascension is important for the environment of the entire cloud operating system. In addition, System Center 2012 is the first Systems management software that truly spans the private cloud and the public cloud. These two points from the performance aspects of some qualitative changes, in addition to this, of course, there are a lot of improvements, such as virtual server support can already support 1TB storage and 64 processors. These performance improvements enhance the ability to manage data centers and reach a new level of experience across private cloud and public cloud management.

Journalist: That is to say, there has been a significant improvement in the management capabilities of the entire data center, where Windows Server might have focused on the server operating system.

Shenwey: I want to be more precise about the overall ability to manage the infrastructure. To some extent, this is not only the concept of a traditional server, but also includes the management of network and storage, but also some data flow management. The concept of building and managing a core infrastructure can reflect the two different deployments that are better able to support both private and public clouds.

Reporter: That is, Microsoft's cloud management is the management of the data center, has long been extended from the server to networked storage, the overall infrastructure.

Shenwey: Yes.

Microsoft's public cloud service for consumers has already begun

Journalist: We know that Microsoft has a very wide range of cloud services in the world, so what services can Microsoft offer at home?

Shenwey: At home, Microsoft is already offering consumer-owned cloud services, including our Hotmail, MSN and Bing searches, and some consumer-owned cloud services, from the public cloud service definition, and we are slowly introducing them, including public cloud services like the Xbox. Of course, we also need to communicate with the Government, in terms of content and many other links through a series of approvals.

In addition, in terms of business users, Office 365 and Azure have now opened up global services to Chinese users, mainly through our Hong Kong line. We are also actively preparing to bring Office365 and azure to China as soon as possible through local partnerships, which means bringing our data centers to mainland China to better and more securely cater to a range of Chinese customers ' needs.

Journalist: In other words, Microsoft's Office365 and Azure are now available at home.

Shenwey: Is through the global service.

Journalist: I also noticed that the first half of Windows Azure started offering a free trial service to the country, so what is the essential difference between the services provided through an offshore data center and the services provided in the future in the domestic data center?

Shenwey: In fact, I think more is to cater to the needs of different users, such as one of our partner PPLive, it is very much hope to expand international business, it is in the domestic peer-to-peer video, has done well, if you want to expand abroad, it is necessary to accept some new challenges. For example, to decide whether or not to build a series of data centers abroad in order to provide better video service on the built infrastructure. But it found that the cost of going to the local data center for global customers was very expensive, so it had a strategic partnership with Microsoft. Now PPLive services for foreign customers are basically based on Windows Azure. Azure allows pplive to focus more on its video services rather than spending a lot of energy on infrastructure or data center management. At the same time, using global resources, Microsoft can also help PPLive to drive some global customers.

Ufida also has a similar case, it is very much hope to open up the customer base in Southeast Asia, through a series of cooperation with us, to better the business to the international market. There is another possible application, such as China's ability to outsource software services, and many customers in Europe and the US are expanding cloud services on the Windows Azure platform,

Of course, there are some local customers, and some of his own business needs, for example, want to keep my customer data in China. We also hope that in the near future, we will set up our own data center in China to help our local customers to make greater contributions to the process management, customer data management and so on.

In short, everything that Microsoft does, whether from technology deployment to operational deployment, is based on the specific needs of customers, providing a range of solutions for customer needs.

Reporter: That is to say, Microsoft has helped the domestic enterprise, in the globalization or the international business expansion aspect, has used Microsoft's Windows Azure. At home, Microsoft is also actively seeking to build its own data center, in order to provide better services for domestic users.

Shenwey: Yes, in fact, I'd like to focus on that, for start-ups, Microsoft also provides support for cloud accelerators. Because a lot of startups are positioned in the mobile internet, it's easier to focus on the global market. Azure can help start-ups move faster into global markets.

Started with Window 8 a year ago.

Reporter: You just mentioned a lot of Windows Azure public cloud services, so in the private cloud, you can not give us some of the larger typical user practices, Microsoft itself can.

Shenwey: In fact, Microsoft itself is a fast 100,000-person company, there are many branches around the world. In this environment, Microsoft itself has such a term, called "eat their own dog food." What it means is that all of the new products that we put out, inside Microsoft, need to be used first, for example, our Windows 8 is already in use in the Shanghai technical Support team 100% before the release. I've been using Win8 for a year. That is, before customers use this product, I must first to experience it, first to use it, otherwise I can not have a good interface with customers.

That's very extensive with Windows Server 2012, System Center 2012, and SQL Server 2012 in the architecture design of the entire IT system. Within Microsoft, this is one aspect. On the other hand, as a member of a very large it ecosystem, Microsoft is actually very willing to share its own internal practices. In November, our CIO, Tony Scott, will also come to China to open a roundtable with some of the CIO in the south to share how the company uses its own products.

In addition, Microsoft also put some of our own products into the cloud services. In fact, when we published Windows Server in September, we also mentioned that Bing's search is now largely on the line in Windows Server 2012. Bing's search has reached billions of dollars a day.

In addition to their own use, of course, we have a large number of customers. such as PetroChina, China Telecom, Jinjiang International are using Windows Server 2012, System Center 2012, SQL Server 2012来 to help enhance it architecture and efficiency within the enterprise. For example, the infrastructure of the PetroChina Office system uses Windows Server 2012 to reduce the need for physical machines and to 1/5. Jinjiang International is another model that adds Windows Server, System Center, and SQL Server together to provide better IT support for the store's new store expansion.

So Microsoft has a lot of very large private cloud users in the country, and we would like to share these cases online.

Shenwey: Yes.

Architecture design and profit model are two challenges for cloud development

Reporter: The next issue is that we know that Microsoft has millions developers on the development platform. So in the context of cloud computing, what do you think will change in the future of the software development model, and what will be the development skills of future programmers?

Shenwey: Because I am also a programmer, so I am quite experienced. I think, in the new era of cloud computing, the impact on programmers will certainly have, there are some new capabilities need to open up. I will say two aspects: on the one hand, from the program architecture design, in the past we do new application compilation, will be related to customer needs. In the era of cloud computing, the impact of architecture design is very large. In a way, you need to think about which part of the application can be seamlessly migrated in the private cloud to the public cloud in the process of application preparation, which is a big challenge to the processing of data volumes. At the same time, there are different challenges to the deployment capabilities of this application in different architectures, so there may be some new ideas in the architecture design of the application.

In addition, the more important point is that from a new generation of application developers, it must reflect on the technical aspects of the operational model, business model should do. Because in the past may be more software licensing mode, or free mode. But the bottom line is that app developers still want to be profitable. So how can a new generation of platform, have a good profit model, such as advertising, virtual currency and other applications in some of the trading models to improve their own profitability possibilities.

In terms of architectural design, it is a new opportunity for programmers to think seriously about profit patterns. Because once the thinking is clear, the profit will be greatly improved. However, in this regard, Microsoft is also very concerned about how to ensure that you just said millions of Microsoft platform developers to the very smooth transition to the cloud era. At the same time, there are some places that have not changed, such as our visual Studio, as a development tool, with the addition of HTML 5 and Java Script support to enhance the programmer's development capabilities.

Cloud partners need to follow up on licensing and subscribe to multiple modes

Reporter: The next question is: Microsoft has been talking about it ecosystem, most of Microsoft's revenue is contributed by partners, then the cloud computing era, Microsoft's partner strategy has not been adjusted, cloud partners in the future need for new certification, Microsoft can provide what new training?

Shenwey: Actually in cloud computing, we have launched a series of projects and plans that are very well connected to the current partner ecosystem. What we need to do is to encourage existing partner channels to better sell some of the cloud-related services, or some new models. I think, in this regard, Microsoft has always attached importance to partners, and the advent of the cloud will better help partners to further upgrade on the existing basis. At the same time for partners, there will certainly be some new requirements: when our Microsoft business model from the licensing mode to the licensing subscription mode, our partner ecosystem also need to follow this trend to enhance its sales capacity. Our core view, not partners to follow Microsoft, Microsoft has changed because customer demand is changing, so our partner's ecosystem must also meet the needs of customers have a greater push.
