In 1998, Mr. Martin Roesch developed the open source intrusion detection system snort in C. Until today, Snort has developed into a multi-platform (multi-platform), real-time (real-time) Traffic analysis, network IP packets (http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/16886.html ">pocket" records, and other features of the powerful network intrusion detection/defense system (receptacle intrusion Detection/prevention System), Nids/nips. Snort complies with the common Public License (Gpl--gun General Pubic License), where snort is available for free downloads, and it only takes a few minutes to install and start using it. Snort is based on Libpcap.

Snort has three modes of operation: sniffer, packet recorder, network intrusion detection system. The sniffer mode simply reads packets from the network and displays them as a continuous stream on the terminal. The packet logger mode logs the packet to the hard disk. Network intrusion detection mode is the most complex and configurable. We can have snort analyze the network data stream to match some of the user-defined rules and take some action based on the test results.

The Snort is a open source receptacle intrusion prevention and detection system (IPS) developed by Sourcefire. Combining the benefits of signature, Kyoto, and anomaly-based Cotecna, Snort is the most widely-deployed IPs Marvell CSM. With millions of downloads and approximately 300,000 registered users, Snort Super-delegates become the de facto to standard for IPS.
