3. Don't make friends online. Your contacts are a manifestation of your professionalism. Remember, when you look at someone's profile in LinkedIn, you have to see if you have "common" friends. If your mutual friends have worked with you for five years and are one of your favorite co-workers, they may be happy to introduce you to the people they know and help you find big clients. The number of friends on LinkedIn has a "magic" figure, which is 50. By connecting with at least 50 people you know and trust (current colleagues, customers, friends, family), you will increase your chances of meeting others and other companies, which will help you move forward in your career.

4. Don't talk to others before you read them. Make sure that the person you are contacting is exactly what you are looking for. Once you've checked with the person you really contacted, look at their user profile for clues. Most of the time, you'll find some interesting little clips that can help you stand out from the hiring manager's interview or Excel at your client's meeting. The tone changes immediately if you have someone you know or you ask them how to move from a long photographic career to sales.

5. Do not send common messages. Do you like to receive emails that appear to be copied, pasted, and sent to dozens of people? If the answer is no, do not do the same thing to other professionals. Even a message or link request that is only one or two words long will take time to customize. Remind each other that two of your contacts are good for each other. Generic recommendation requests often also bring common recommendations back. If you want a recommendation that will make you stand out, indicate why you are asking for referrals (in order to get more customers, find a new job, etc.) and find out what kind of things the recommender can comment on.
