Sony China responded to the midday news of October 31, in response to Sony's second-quarter financial results in fiscal year 2014 and the mobile-related adjustments it had launched this morning:
1. Sony mobile will significantly reduce the size of its mobile presence in China. A significant portion of the layoffs planned by Sony Mobile, which involves 1,000 employees around the world, are coming from China.
2. Sony Mobile will stop developing specific phone models for the Chinese market, but will consider providing full format models.
3. Sony Mobile will accelerate the implementation of its business reform measures under the new management, announced on October 30, to build an operational framework that will make a steady contribution to profits. (The content of the business reform measures will be announced at the investor's meeting on November 25)
Sony China said the move was based on a reassessment and realignment of the mobile business's medium-term plan, with China, the US and Japan being Sony's three largest markets, and the strategic reorientation of the mobile business would not affect Sony's positioning as a "significant growth and profit-contributing market" for the Chinese market.
