South Big General CTO: Big Data Let the domestic database usher in spring

In the siege of large manufacturers such as Oracle, IBM and Microsoft, domestic database makers are still struggling to survive. This is an undeniable fact that the database market is close to saturation, especially in the face of the relationship between the transaction database field, foreign manufacturers start early, rich in resources, and also continue to encroach on the market segments, has formed a huge advantage. Faced with this situation, the South's general CTO Vounie that the domestic database manufacturers have missed the best time, should not take their own short board (OLTP) to go head-to-head, but should be in the direction of OLAP. At the same time, with the advent of large data age, NoSQL and Newsql have more development space, and the distributed database architecture based on column storage is more and more accepted by customers.

In the just-concluded database Conference (DTCC), the domestic database Gbase received wide attention. TechTarget Chinese journalist also conducted an interview with Dr. Vounie and discussed the topics of domestic database, newsql and large data. The following is the transcript of this interview:

TechTarget: I noticed that the main database Gbase 8a is an analytical database, mainly in the face of OLAP load, this is how to consider?

Vounie: Vendors like Oracle have been doing databases for more than 30 of years, and trying to catch up and even surpass them requires a new technology line to be considered at the bottom of the implementation. The current mainstream database vendors in the OLTP processing is relatively good, and in the overall performance of OLAP is very common. Gbase 8a mainly for data analysis (OLAP) load, but also see the mainstream manufacturers weaker than a piece, with their own strengths and other people's short board to compete.

Techtarget:gabse also uses a schema such as a column store, and how does it differ from a column-type database Sybase IQ? Where is the advantage?

Vounie: Gbase 8 A uses the schema of the column-type storage and the large-scale parallel processing (MPP). Although Sybase IQ first proposed the concept of a gbase database, the biggest difference is that it supports horizontal scaling (Scale out) and is the architecture of share nothing. Sybase IQ, or a shared-storage minicomputer architecture, is not as gbase in scaling as it is for large-scale parallel computing. So in terms of architecture, there needs to be a dual support for both column storage and MPP.

TechTarget: From your introduction, Gbase 8a architecture should be more similar to Greenplum, what is the difference between these two products?

Vounie: Gbase 8a and Greenplum basically belong to the same class of products, I call them Newsql database. Users should be very familiar with Greenplum and have done a lot of testing and comparisons. Compared with Greenplum, although it is based on MPP architecture, but Gbase 8a has a flat design, that is, not set a physical master. This advantage is embodied in two aspects, Master's high availability and concurrency.

In addition to architectural design, I think the biggest advantage of gbase is that as a local enterprise, the support of domestic users will do better and more flexible, including the discovery of problems and solve problems faster than foreign manufacturers. At the same time, in terms of cost-effective, it will be better than foreign manufacturers, after all, the cost is also the main consideration of customers.

TechTarget: You just mentioned the concept of newsql, how do you define it? What's the difference between newsql and what we often say about NoSQL?

Vounie: The industry has a different definition of newsql. In my opinion, NoSQL is relatively easy to explain, it gives up the relational model, mainly in key-value way to process the data. At the application level, NoSQL mainly processes data in a programmatic way rather than in our usual SQL. And Newsql is a relative concept, it mainly compares the oldsql, namely the traditional relational database, including Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, etc. These oldsql product genes still belong to 30 years ago, mainly in row storage, oriented to transaction processing.

Newsql and Oldsql and NoSQL have formed the three main camps for the current database products, which have emerged over the past decade, and although the relational model has been used, there is a significant difference in architecture and database implementation from traditional relational databases. Newsql mainly in the column-type storage, large-scale use of MPP based on parallel computing to meet the requirements of large data processing, belongs to the share nothing architecture. At the same time, newsql products are mainly oriented to the application of large data analysis and mining.

TechTarget: In addition to Gbase, at home and abroad more mature newsql products have? What is the acceptance and application of domestic customers for Newsql?

Vounie: At present, there are many Newsql database products, the market is more mature newsql products are mainly EMC acquisition of Greenplum, HP acquired Vertica,teradata acquisition asterdata. The Hana of SAP I think can also count as a member of the Newsql camp, it mainly involves the memory computation, at the same time Hana also adopted the column storage architecture.

From the point of view of the customers I have come into contact with, we have begun to accept the Newsql technology and recognize some of its advantages and values. Large data and cloud computing impact on traditional databases is very large, including the telecommunications, financial industry, some of the major customers, their data volume growth is very fast. Customers have to face new technical frameworks to deal with these problems, so they are very willing to try something positive. Customers who have tried have found that the advantages of the new architecture are obvious, and that there is no way to backtrack.

TechTarget: What opportunities do large data provide to domestic database manufacturers such as NTU? What do you think is the future direction of the domestic database?

Vounie: I think the big data let the domestic database spring really come, this is a 30 years of development opportunities. In the traditional database field, we as domestic manufacturers "weather" has been missed, and large data is a new "day", is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, we must grasp. From its own point of view, the South General GM began six years ago, 8a database product development, in the direction of technical selection and time points are more accurate. The fact has proved that since 2010, the South General's database product development is very smooth, now has a lot of success stories.

The competition for new technology is like running a marathon, the first to run through the end is the winner. This process will be very long and difficult, to have confidence in themselves, this confidence is the source of our customers, customers are actually using the domestic database products, and get a good return. As the South general, we will continue to increase research and development and market investment in two, while maintaining an open mind in technology, more and better technology to learn from their own products.
