The Cloudscaling Team is proud to announce that South Korea Telecom, the country's largest fixed-line operator and second-largest mobile operator, has officially launched its first large-scale private cloud. In August this year, South Korea Telecom announced that it would deploy a full cloud service environment to deal with the Big bang on smartphones, the Internet and multimedia. The private cloud will be used as the operating platform within the Korean telecom. This is a milestone in the development of Korea Telecom in the field of cloud computing services.

Projects of this size require excellent teamwork, as does the project. In addition to working with the cloud computing division of Korea Telecom, Cloudscaling is fortunate to work with service providers from Intel, Citrix, Nexenta, cloud.com and Korea to complete the project.

Recently, Randy Bias, Cloudscaling's chief executive, interviewed Jung-sik Suh, senior vice president of the Korea Telecom Cloud Services Division, on the project. Excerpts from the dialogue are as follows:

RLB: What is the reason for Korea Telecom to decide to build Korea's largest private cloud?

JSS: Telecoms companies should be concerned about the vast amount of data generated by the advent of smartphones, the Internet and multimedia, and we should be fully prepared for massive data growth. There are many ways and means to deal with the Big bang, but we think cloud computing is the best solution.

RLB: Korea Telecom is very different. Most other telecoms companies do not want to venture into cloud computing, they want to deal with the situation through traditional solutions, while South Korea Telecom has opted for cloud computing. What makes you decide to do this cloud computing solution, similar to the large-scale integration of software and hardware into automated products like Amazon and Google? Why does this solution make you so passionate?

JSS: In fact, we communicated with many other cloud computing companies before negotiating with your company. We ask ourselves whose solution best fits our vision. The company CEO and I all think that the cloud architecture provided by enterprise vendors is not the most appropriate. Because almost all cloud technologies are launched by internet companies, they stand at the forefront of technology and are the guide and standard-makers of the trend. So we try to understand their thinking and operating patterns about cloud architecture and logic. We seek to update better technology. By learning how Internet companies think, it suddenly occurred to us that we could implement our own cloud strategy and achieve a level of confrontation with other companies in a short time. After our survey and communication with more than 30 cloud service providers, we found that this cloud thinking is a different way of thinking than traditional it people. Not only at a certain point, but in different ways.

RLB: This approach does have the courage! What about the progress? How does Korea telecom implement this strategy quickly?

JSS: First of all, the CEO of our Company believes that the implementation of this cloud strategy is completely different from the traditional practice of implementing new projects in the past. As a company with a history of 117 years, we have many traditions and practices. For this project, we change the traditional decision making process by creating a new cloud computing department so that we can implement it faster. To do the project well, we almost broke all the unwritten conventions.

RLB: It looks like Korea Telecom is ambitious. It is understood that Korea telecom there are many in the preparation phase of the cloud computing project, the private cloud is only a start. Can you briefly introduce the cloud portfolio strategy of Korea Telecom?

JSS: We want to be the leader in Korea's cloud computing market. We are working with companies from Asia and Europe who can provide updated services and applications as we implement our cloud strategy.

We were heartened by the announcement of the private cloud. Because this is Amazon, Google, Rackspace and other respected cloud computing architecture and philosophy of the landing of another witness.

We use ordinary hardware products to reduce upfront fixed and variable costs, and the software architecture is mainly through the use of free software or open source software to reduce licensing costs. Cloud computing facilities must be highly stable, which means that hardware and software failures do not disrupt services. This loosely coupled architecture service enables automatic allocation, deployment, and management of resources.

Finally, our goal is to be an infrastructure designed for operations.
